Improvement in law entrance exams not enough – Law students

Communications Officer for the National Association of Law Students (NALS), Nii Adotey Cudjoe, says although the results of the 2020 Entrance Examination Results for admission to the Ghana School of Law (GSL) is commendable, there is more room for improvement.

The statement by the NALS communications Officer follows an improvement in the 2020 Law School Entrance Examination.

The Independent Examination Committee of the General Legal Council (GLC) in a statement said 1045 out of a total of 2720 candidates passed  the 2020 Law School Entrance Examination.

This is an increase in the number of students who passed the exams in 2019.

Only 128 students out of 1,820 candidates passed the Ghana School of Law entrance exam.

After the mass failure in 2019, the students accused the General Legal Council (GCL) of a deliberate attempt to deny certain people access to legal education in Ghana.

Reacting to the news on Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Communication Officer for the National Associations of Law Students (NALS), Nii Adotey Cudjoe, said the improvement in the pass reassures many  that the GLC is committed to resolve the issues surrounding access to legal education.

He added that it is, however,  possible to implement a the solution which are immediate to solve the issue mass failure in the Ghana School of law entrance exams.

” What we can say is that there is more room for improvement.  What we want are immediate solutions. The two immediate solutions that we are talking about is to decentralise to the law faculties that can run the programme and we are also looking forward for an independent candidate for the Ghana Bar finals so that students who has  LLB will have the opportunity to sit and write the final exams and not give priority to only students who go through Makola “, he explained

Asked whether or not he believes the success rate can be attributed to the fact that the nation goes to the poll Dec 7, Communication Officer for the National Associations of Law Students (NALS), Nii Adotey Cudjoe said the focus ofthe association is to fight for a total reform of the Ghana School of Law Exams devoid of politics.

He assured the law students enjoyed that the association will continue to pursue reforms to ensure better access to legal education for all is granted.
