Intensify prosecution of persons who flout sanitation rules- PNC

The National Organiser for People's National Convention (PNC), Desmond Twumasi Ntow, has called on the government to intensify prosecution of those who flouts sanitation rules.

According to him, despite the fact that some arrests have been made in the years, it was not enough to deter Ghanaians from throwing refuse into gutters.

The call came following the floods that occurred last Sunday, taking the lives of about five people and destroying properties.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s Flagship Morning show, Ghana Nie, Twumasi Ntow said that “Our human activities have caused these flooding we experience every time it rains. People should be arrested for pouring refuse into gutters.”

“People pour refuse into gutters, forgetting that someone is at the receiving end and might suffer the consequences. If we change our attitude in this country, then with the little the government does, we will be good to go as a country,” he added.

Meanwhile, Twumasi Ntow also attributed the perennial flooding to the houses that had been built on water ways, preventing water from flowing through its path while it rains.

He urged those who engaged in such activities to put a stop to it.

The Founder and Leader of Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Percival Kofi Akpaloo, also advised the government to pay contractors to re-construct or complete ancillary works that needs to be done to prevent flooding, especially at Nkrumah Circle.

“These kind of disasters cannot end because the way we do things in this country is not right. Contractors go for loans and after using it to start work, their payment is delayed. Due to this, they also default in paying the loans and ends up doing shabby works,” he said.

Akpaloo also called on government to pay the waste management company, Zoomlion to dredge or distil gutters for free flow of water in order to stop the floods in Acccra.

“The government must pay Zoomlion to dredge the Odor river. People are going to die more if the gutters are not distilled,” he added.

He however, advised the government to intensify education on sanitation in order to curb the flooding situation in the country.
