KNUST administrators back UTAG, withdraw services

Members of the  Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has withdrawn its services over government’s dissolution of the University’s Governing Council.

In a statement signed by the Vice President of the KNUST branch of GAUA, Anthony Gollo, he expressed disappointment in the government  over its  decision to dissolve the KNUST Governing Council and establish an interim  one as part of measures to address the impasse in the University.

“We believe that the University Act and statutes provide an adequate mechanism to deal with the impasse. We therefore do not recognize the interim council and so reject it outright. GAUA insists on the restoration of the dissolved governing council of the University,” he added.

Anthony Gollo stated GAUA withdraws its services with immediate effect until it restores the KNUST governing council.

Government in a statement dissolved the KNUST Council and, in its stead, instituted a 7-member Interim Council.

The statement directed the Interim Council to ensure that the University reopens within fourteen days to enable academic work to continue.

The Interim Council chaired by Nana Effah Apenteng, Paramount Chief of the Bompata Traditional Area, has a three-month tenure.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council closed down the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology after a peaceful demonstration turned violent on Monday.
