NPP gov't masterminded KNUST unrest to sack VC – Otokunor

A Communications team member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Otokunor Boamah, has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of politically masterminding the disturbances at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)   to pave way for the dismissal of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso.

KNUST students led by the SRC embarked on a supposed peaceful demonstration  on Monday against what they described as brutalities by the University authorities.

The peaceful demonstration, however, turned chaotic as some distressed demonstrators smashed louvres, billboards, windscreens of parked vehicles, as well as other University properties.

Eighteen students were arrested in connection with the issue and are currently assisting the police in their investigations.

Following the disturbances, there have been calls by some persons for the VC to either be dismissed or resign.

The Governing Council of the University has been dissolved and a 7-member interim council has been instituted to restore normalcy in KNUST.

Speaking with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive Friday, Peter Otokunor Boamah, stated that the Education Minister publicly supported the “mixed hall” saga which was heavily opposed by the student body.

He noted that the VC only implements decisions taken by University Council and that it is unacceptable to hold him (VC) accountable for such decisions.

The Governing Council of the University has been dissolved and a 7-member interim council has been instituted to restore normalcy in KNUST.

“This follows briefs and recommendations made by the Minister for Education, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh after he led a high powered delegation, including the Minister for National Security, Hon. Albert Kan Dapaah and the Minister-Designate for Information, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah to Kumasi”, a statement from the Ministry of Education stated.
