President of the Foundation of Concerned Arts Professionals (FOCAP), Kojo Preko Dankwa, has called on the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and the government to collaborate in honoring the late legendary gospel musician, Yaw Sarpong.
Yaw Sarpong, founder and leader of the renowned Asomafo Band, passed away on January 20, 2026, at the age of 66 in Kumasi. The celebrated gospel musician had been receiving medical treatment for some time prior to his death.
Speaking to Atinka TV’s entertainment journalist Melody Amoako, the entertainment stakeholder emphasized the importance of recognizing gospel musicians both during their lifetime and after their passing.

According to him, honoring such legends helps preserve their contributions to Ghana’s music industry and national heritage.
Kojo Dankwah suggested that lasting tributes such as statues, books, or documented works be created to celebrate the lives and achievements of these icons so that future generations can learn from their legacy.
He further noted that within a short period, Ghana has lost two major gospel figures from the same Asomafo Band — Maame Tiwa, a key member of the group, and its founder, Yaw Sarpong. He described their passing as a significant loss to the gospel music fraternity.
Mr. Dankwah stressed that sustaining a music career for over 40 years is no small achievement, and called on MUSIGA to take the lead in honouring such legends if state recognition is not forthcoming.
