The Kumasi Declaration on The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has been presented to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a gesture by the Asantehene, Otumfuor Osei Tutu to support the President’s global role as Co Chair of the Eminent Group of Advocates for the SDGs.
The Kumasi declaration among other things addressed the need for the government to create the enabling environment for traditional rulers, religious leaders and the Private sector to attain the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
At a brief ceremony at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo was grateful to the Asantehene for the initiative adding that it has strengthen his resolve to achieve the SDGs.
The Kumasi declaration is an initiative by the Asantehene, Otumfuor Osei Tutu, traditional leaders, religious rulers, the academia, youth and selected CEOs from the Private sector to dialogue on key imperatives for achieving the SDG and honor former UN General Secretary Kofi Annan.
A delegation led by the Bompata Manhene, Nana Efa Apenteng said that the Kumasi Declaration be transmitted to the Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres for sharing with the SDG Advocates.
The declaration urged the Government to enhance mechanism for mobilsing domestic resources in support of the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as well as create innovative and blended financing structures that can integrate public investment with traditional corporate financing.
To tackle gender inequality, the declaration affirmed support for women entrepreneurship as a part of broader programme on the empowerment of women and increased investment in education and training particularly girls.
Touching on education, the declaration urged government to develop 2030 Agenda for SDG awareness and engagement learning module for delivery at the SHSs through trained teachers as wellas programmes that unleash the potential of the youth to make direct contribution to the SDG. Bompata Manhene, Nana Efa Apenteng led the Otumfuor delegation.
President Akufo Addo praised the religious leaders for supporting the SDG course.
The Delegation later presented a Commemorative plaque to the President.
