Manya Krobo: Residents ready to pay actual bills – MCE

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Manya Krobo, Simon Tetteh, says residents of Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region are ready and willing to pay actual bills following the recent impasse.
Police and officials of Power Distribution Service Company clashed with residents of Manya Kpongunor in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality last Sunday over an alleged mass disconnection exercise being carried out by the power distributors.
Some irate youth blocked the main Kpong-Odumase road to prevent the officials of PDS from continuing the ongoing electricity disconnection exercise.
The people of Manya and Yilo Krobo have accused PDS of over-billing residents of these communities.
The exercise which did not go down well with the police resulted in the firing of tear gas and the arrest of some of the youth in the process.
The people have since refused to pay the said excessive bills citing an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) the earlier settlers of Manya Krobo signed with the Volta River Authority (VRA) when their land was taken for the construction of the Akosombo Dam by government and overbilling on the part of the PDS.
Speaking to Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka AM Drive, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Manya Krobo, Simon Tetteh said residents of these areas are ready to pay actual bills. He noted that some have even started making payments at the various centers.
He however pleaded with the PDS to cooperate and correct these anomalies in the system.
He asked the PDS to also re-connect the lights of persons who have paid their bills.
PDS has in a statement said it has cleansed the debt using the CMS software of Krobo areas from GHS195,725,500.29 to GHS84,625,624.87. It says the process was a data cleansing and not a debt waiver.
