The Member of Parliament for Mpohor Constituency, Mr John Kobina Abbam Aboah Sanie, has fired the media for reporting minute crimes committed in the country under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and making it look like the Government is not doing well with security.

His comments come after a section of the public, including the National Democratic Congress raised concerns over the increasing crime rate in the country.

In recent times, many crimes, especially involving killings and robbery have been reported in the media.

This has raised a lot of fear amongst the Ghanaian people, questioning the state of security in the country.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr John Kobina Abbam Aboah Sanie said there was no society which was crime free, adding that even in the first-class countries, they record crimes every 24 hours after which the security agencies come in to look for culprits.

“Everyone is going to their work, drivers, farmers are going to work, if we woke up and heard no one is going out or everyone is in their room, that is where we have a state of insecurity but as at now, everyone is doing what they are doing. As for these infractions of things or crimes we are hearing, it has been with the society for ages,” he explained.

Mr John Kobina Abbam Aboah Sanie noted that, “What is worrying is that because of social media and the proactiveness of the media, when something happens even in the villages, then it is all over and so it gives that impression that something is happening in the country and it is drawing our security back.”

Meanwhile, he said based on a police report, there were more crimes committed in 2015 and 2016 as compared to now, despite having more crimes reported in the news.

He noted that in 2015, 525 murders were committed, explaining that in every month based on ratio, more than 50 persons were murdered in that year.

The MP continued that 549 persons were murdered in 2016, saying about 60 persons were killed monthly according to the ratio, questioning if all these crimes were reported in the media.

“I don’t know whether it is an agenda from the opposition party, NDC, everything that happens in any corner, they blow it up and the media is also interested in this kind of news and they run it without checking. This month, from August 1st to 31st, we have to check how many people were murdered in the country. You cannot even have 10,” he said.

The MP said compared to the NDC-Administration, the NPP-Government has ‘calmed down crime and murder in the country’.

“Why was the media not publishing and discussing these issues then? Today, every little thing or when something happens somewhere then it triggers all over, making the government look as if the security is not working, but for the past four to five years, Nana Akufo-Addo’s Administration has provided the best security for this Nation,” he said.
