MP raises red flag over National Rental Assistance Scheme

Member of Parliament for Twifo Atti Morkwa in the Central Region, David Vondee, has raised some questions with respect to funds disbursed under the National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS).

This comes after a total of GH¢13.7 million has been disbursed so far under the National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS) from January to October 2023.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye, who provided an update on the operations of the scheme in Parliament in Accra on Wednesday.

National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS) scheme was launched as part of measures to provide decent accommodation for Ghanaians. Ghanaians above the age of 18 with a valid national ID card and verifiable employment with an income, qualify for a rent loan in five to ten working days under the scheme.

“Since the scheme was launched in January 2023 to October 2023, a total of 1,105 Ghanaians from six operational regions that is Greater Accra, Eastern, Western, Ashanti, Northern and Bono East regions have benefitted from the scheme. Mr Speaker, GH¢13, 785,591 have been disbursed to cover the rent advance to all the 1105 beneficiaries across the six operational regions.”

Speaking to host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Nana Fianko, Member of Parliament for Twifo Atti Morkwa in the Central Region, David Vondee, said the National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS) has never been brought to the floor of Parliament to be debated and be considered.

According to the lawmaker, “somebody somewhere is just paying money to some NPP boys and calling it a scheme”.

“We have not even passed it into law. It has not even come to the floor of Parliament to be debated and to be considered and to be passed. Unfortunately, somebody somewhere is just paying money to some NPP boys and calling it a scheme. And I asked this question myself, which law is backing this. When I asked the answer I got was that government has decided to help people to rent houses. Look, nothing has been done about Saglemi housing. Is government business supposed to build affordable housing for citizenry or we should be jumping round every community looking for houses to rent for people?” he quizzed.
