NALAG educates assembly women on elections

Women have been asked to stay away from political violence to safeguard national peace and stability before, during and after the coming December 7 general elections.

They received the advise at a two-day workshop held to educate women on elections.

The two -day workshop was organised by National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) with support from the Commonwealth Local Government Forum, attended by over 200 female Assembly members and government appointees from Bono, Ahafo, Bono East and western North Regions.

Mr Kokro Amankwaah, the General Secretary of the National Association of the Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) urged Ghanaians not to allow partisan politics to divide the people and the country as a whole.

In an interview with Atinka TV news team on the sidelines of a capacity building training workshop for female Assembly members held at Fiapre in the Sunyani West municipality, Mr Amankwaah said women and children were the most affected in any political violence and instability.

He was of the belief that the workshop will create platforms for the voices of women to be heard and as well contribute significantly to national discourse and decision making.

Joyce Ekuful, the West Africa Regional Programmes Officer of the CLGF explained that the forum had since improved on the capacity of women in local government.

She expressed the hope that the female assembly members would encourage other women to avail themselves to contest District Level Elections in the coming years.

The theme for the programme was Advancing women’s political participation and leadership with the local government.

Some of the participants shared their views with Atinka News after the workshop.
