National Cathedral for a secular state discriminatory – Kwabena Bomfeh

James Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr. Known in politics as Kabila, a member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has reiterated that Ghana does not have a national religion hence the construction of a national Cathedral is needless.

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday, March 6, 2017, cut the sword for the construction of a national cathedral of interdenominational worship in Accra.

Several concerns have been raised with others questioning if the construction of a National cathedral is the country’s topmost priority at the moment.

Former  Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, John Peter Amewu , in an interview with the media during the launch of the project, stated that the Scholarship Secretariat, Passport Office at Ridge, some nine bungalows occupied by Appeals Court Judges as well as other structures within the Ridge enclave are to be destroyed to pave way for the construction of the 5000 seater National Cathedral.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, a member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) James Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr explained that Ghana is a country with diverse religions and the usage of tax payers money for the construction of a national cathedral is discriminatory.

Kwabena Bomfeh is currently at the Supreme Court to seek the Court’s intervention to quash government's decision  in what he describes as Government's excessive involvement in the religious affairs of the state.

According to him, for government to be described as been fair to other religious sects , it  should also construct a national mosque for muslims , a national shrine for those who believe in African Traditional Religion  as well as a monastry for those who believe in budaism.

“Trying to lift one religion above all other religions is an attempt to make that particular religion a state religion. We are not a state that believes in one religion. We are a secular state”, he opined.
