National Cathedral: Muslim groups kick against gov’ts involvement

The Coalition of Muslim Organizations (COMOG) has asked the government to desist from involving itself in religious activities in the country and wants it to withdraw its assistance in building a National Cathedral for the Christian Community .

The group has joined sections of the public opposing the government's involvement in the construction of a National Cathedral and also added the organisation of the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

The group which is an amalgamation of muslim groupings in Ghana said it finds the use of government resources in organising Hajj as well as building a National Cathedral needless.

The President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday, March 6, 2017, cut the sword for the construction of a 5000 seater national cathedral for interdenominational worship in Accra. The Project when started will see to the pulling down of buildings housing the Scholarship Secretariat, the Passport Office and  some nine bungalows occupied by Appeals Court Judges .

Speaking on Atinka FM’s Morning Show with Ekourba Gyasi on Wednesday, General Secretary for the Coalition of Muslim Organizations (COMOG), Alhaji Abdul Manaf, stated that although the group is not against the construction of a national cathedral, it believes that as a secular state it is proper that government takes its hands off projects and activities of all religious bodies in Ghana.

He also debunked rumors that the government gave the Muslim community a land to construct their ultra-modern mosque in Kawukudi – Mamobi in Accra.

“What we know is that the government has allocated a plot of land which belongs to the whole Ghana for the construction of a National Cathedral. Muslims in Ghana were not given any land, the former President Jerry John Rawlings destroyed our mosque in Makola and the Kawukudi land was given to us as a compensation”, he explained.

Meanwhile,a Former National Youth Organiser of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr, Popularly Known as "Kabila" is currently at the Supreme Court, seeking to quash government’s decision to assist in building the National cathedral.
