Newly created districts imposing stress on national treasury- Kwabena Agyapong

Presidential hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, has bemoaned the number of newly created districts in Ghana.

The creation of new municipalities and districts involves the elevation and realignment of some municipalities and districts.

There are currently sixteen regions which have been further divided for administrative purposes into 216 local districts.

The former ten regional boundaries were officially established in 1987, when the Upper West Region was inaugurated as the state’s newest administrative region.

Although the official inauguration was in 1987, the Upper West Region had already functioned as an administrative unit since the break-up of the Upper Region in December 1982, prior to the 1984 national census.

The referendum on the creation of six new regions was held on December 27, 2018 all proposed new regions were approved.

Speaking exclusively on Atinka TV’s Morning Show “Ghana Nie” with host Ama Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwa, presidential hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, has bemoaned the number of newly created districts in Ghana.

Kwabena Agyei Agyapong said that surveys show that adding more districts hasn’t changed how services are delivered in any way.

The NPP candidate for president said that if he becomes president of Ghana, he will work with other people to get rid of the new regions.

“Let’s ask ourselves, how has Ghana benefitted from the increase in districts?” Has it improved the delivery of service from the assembly to its constituents? In Greater Accra alone, there are over 18 municipal assemblies. To manage engineering functions properly, like roads, drainage, housing, and sanitation, becomes difficult when there are so many districts and assemblies. “Hopefully, when I become president, I will work with the stakeholders to roll it back because seriously, it is posing too much stress on the national treasury, ” Kwabena Agyei Agyapong added.
