The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), led by Chief Executive Victor Asare Bampoe, has stepped up its nationwide youth enrollment drive through its high-impact Campus Connect initiative. The programme has already reached students at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), the University of Ghana, Takoradi Technical University (TTU), and Accra Technical University, as part of efforts to build a strong health insurance culture across tertiary institutions.

According to Dr. Bampoe, the goal goes beyond registration. He noted that the Authority wants students to understand and manage their memberships independently, stressing NHIA’s focus on youth engagement, digital innovation, and grassroots outreach.
Taking services directly to students
Timed to align with orientation and campus welcome activities, the activations brought essential NHIS services straight to students. This approach reduced long queues and administrative hurdles, making access simpler and more convenient.

The team, led by Angela Asiedu, Acting Deputy Director of Marketing and Branding under the Corporate Affairs Directorate, offered on-the-spot registration for uninsured students, renewal of expired memberships, and assistance with linking NHIS cards to Ghana Cards. This requirement forms part of the Authority’s ongoing reforms.
The seamless delivery highlights NHIA’s shift toward convenience, efficiency, and proactive engagement.
A strong digital focus
Students were also introduced to digital options such as the *929# USSD short code and the MyNHIS App, which allow them to renew memberships and access insurance information remotely. Officials say this digital push is key to serving a generation that prioritizes speed, accessibility, and self-service.

Advocacy and transparency
Campus Connect also created space for education and accountability. Students learned about the NHIS Benefit Package and the Authority’s strict stance against illegal payments at accredited health facilities. They were encouraged to request receipts for any payments and report unauthorized charges for investigation and possible refunds. This is expected to improve trust and protect members’ rights.
For many participants, it was their first direct interaction with NHIS officials, making the policy feel more real and personal.
Expanding the vision
The growing reach of Campus Connect reflects Dr. Bampoe’s broader strategy of focusing on youth enrollment, digital transformation, and early adoption among future professionals. As the programme continues to expand across universities nationwide, it is gradually becoming more than an outreach activity. It is evolving into a movement that promotes health security among students while positioning NHIS as a modern and youth-focused public service brand.
