No Academic Fee Policy: Students from Technical Universities will benefit- NDC TEIN

The Tertiary Education Institution Network (TEIN), the vibrant student wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has assured that level 100 students of Technical Universities will not be left out of the no academic fees policy.

At the launch of the NDC’s Youth Manifesto, the Flagbearer of the party, John Dramani Mahama stated that level 100 students of tertiary institutions will not pay academic fees if he is elected back into government.

“We will implement a no-fees stress programme to alleviate the financial burden on parents and students in financing tertiary education”.

The Policy has generated a huge debate amongst the public, with most questioning the source of funding among others.

In a statement by TEIN, it observed recent claims by some communicators of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggesting that the next NDC government in 2025 will exclude Level 100 students in technical universities from the No Academic Fees Policy.

“We categorically state that these claims are unfounded and a misrepresentation of our policy intent,” TEIN stated.

It explained that in 2016, the NDC, under the leadership of President John Mahama and Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as Minister of Education, successfully converted polytechnics into technical universities, describing that as a transformative step to enhance higher education in Ghana.

According to TEIN, This achievement underscores the NDC’s commitment to inclusive and equitable education for all Ghanaians.

“Our commitment to education remains unwavering. The No Academic Fees Policy, as outlined in our Youth Manifesto, is designed to alleviate the financial burdens on parents and ensure that all students, including those in technical universities, have access to higher education without barriers. We believe that education is a fundamental right and that every Ghanaian deserves a fair opportunity to pursue their academic aspirations,” TEIN added.

Again, TEIN recalled that in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Mahama advocated for the absorption of fees for all Level 100 students in tertiary institutions; a proposal that was unfortunately ignored by the current government.

That, TEIN said demonstrates the NDC’s consistent prioritization of education, even in challenging times.

It explained further,”The NDC’s track record speaks for itself. From the introduction of Free Compulsory Basic Education in 1995 to the Progressive Free Senior High School Education program in 2015, our policies have consistently aimed at reducing the financial burden on Ghanaian families and expanding access to quality education. Our vision is clear: to build a Ghana where every student, regardless of their background or the institution they attend, has the support they need to succeed.”

Meanwhile, TEIN urged Ghanaians to disregard the misinformation being circulated, adding that no level 100 student would be left out.

“The NDC is committed to implementing the No Academic Fees Policy for all Level 100 students, including those in technical universities. We invite you to join us in building a brighter future for our nation— one where education remains the cornerstone of our development. Trust in the NDC. Trust in John Mahama and Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to lead us into a prosperous future in 2025,” TEIN added.
