Ghana’s Health Minister, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has made it known that Government has put a hold on the Free Kidney Dialysis programme until further notice.
According to him, the previous administration failed to allocate funds for the continuation of the free kidney dialysis programme, therefore its temporary halt.

The initiative, launched on December 1, 2024, aimed to provide free kidney dialysis to patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme.
However, Hon. Akandoh revealed that the programme faced financial constraints due to a lack of dedicated funding, resulting in its conclusion in December 2024.
In a ceremony to inaugurate the technical taskforce for MahamaCares Trust Fund on Wednesday, March 13, 2025, Mr. Akandoh stated that the MahamaCares fund aims to provide financial support for individuals with chronic illnesses and expand access to quality care for chronic diseases, including kidney treatments.
When asked about the differences between MahamaCares and the previous government’s initiative, Hon. Akandoh explained that the previous programme lacked funding, leading to its halt.
