A statement signed by the Executive Director for the scheme, Osei Assibey Antwi, noted that Alex Opoku-Mensah is expected to work under supervision at the NSS head office after his suspension.

His suspension is part of recommendations from the committee of enquiry which was tasked to investigate the incident between the former regional NSS director and a nurse at the Manhyia Hospital on 27th November 2022.

Background

Alex Opoku-Mensah, was suspended by the Ashanti Region Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS) following his outbursts at the Manhyia hospital.

The suspension follows an emergency meeting held by management of the Scheme on Wednesday, November 30.

A statement issued by the Acting Director of Corporate Affairs, Ambrose Entsiwah Jnr, said the suspension was to allow management conduct further investigation into the alleged verbal assault on a nurse on duty at the Manhyia Government Hospital in Kumasi.

Management of the Scheme assured an investigation into the recorded verbal assault on the nurse as captured in a leaked tape.

In a recorded conversation, which went viral, a doctor’s father, Alex Opoku-Mensah, who doubles as the Ashanti Region Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), was heard insulting a nurse of the Hospital over a “wrong prescription” encounter between his daughter (the Doctor) and the nurse.

Although Alex Opoku-Mensah has apologized for his actions, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) issued a statement calling for his dismissal.
