Onion sellers are now selling at a luxurious market-Ga West MCE

The Municipal Chief Executive(MCE) of the Ga West Municipal Assembly, Mr Clement Wilkinson says the new market at Adjen Kotoku is luxurious for the onion sellers as compared to that of Agbogbloshie.

The Government issued a seven-week ultimatum to the onion traders to relocate from Agbogbloshie to Adjen Kotoku, where a new market, which was established over a decade had been allocated to them.

This was part of measures taken to decongest the Central Business District.

After resisting all attempts to relocate from Agbogbloshie to Adjen Kotoku, the onion sellers finally moved to Adjen Kotoku on Thursday morning, July 1,2021.

They complained that the market was not ready while it was small to contain all of them.

But speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie, with Co Host, Ama Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwa, Mr Wilkinson said the new market has been designed in a way that the sellers will feel more comfortable doing their businesses there.

“It is not a muddy place, we have put 0;40 on the red soil and we have graded it, and so the place is very perfect for them and when they got there they were very happy,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said those who stand by the road side to sell yams and onions at Graphic Road are the ones who are saying they will not leave and not those who sell in bulk.

He explained that those selling in smaller quantities are not the target but those who sell the onions in bulk.

Mr Wilkinson noted one the reasons the onion sellers resisted the relocation was the fact that most of them had put up temporary structures and lived in them at the same place they sold the onion, saying that they will not be allowed to do same at this new market. We have pampered them too,” he said.

“We have a security post there. We wouldn’t want the place to be like sodom and gomorah, because they are now at Canaan and it is just milk and honey so we will not allow those things.

The MCE said in two weeks’ time, the government will complete a car park and some small rooms for the drivers to relax when they come there to offload the onions.
He also said they will also build a fuel station there.
