Opinion: John Mahama’s last political gamble

Apambila

Perhaps what Mahama does not realize, is that being a statesman is by far more valuable to him. Since he left office, instead of relaxing and having more stately respect than a former president so that the NDC presidential aspirants will be going to meet him for their blessings, he is set to put it at risk and wants to contest for the fourth time.

“A leader is best when people barely know he exists.” Lao-tsy, a 16th-century Chinese proverb.

God, I believe, gave John a choice to make in 2012; just as the Almighty gave Gandhi a choice in India in 1948 and Mandela, after finishing his first and last term as President of South Africa. The man who could have been the first Indian Prime Minister, just by asking, turned down the offer.

Mandela could also have gone for a second, or even third term in South Africa. He stopped at one. God provided the opportunity, and Ghanaian voters, including many of those who are now casting doubts, elected him (Mahama) President in 2012. Hitler’s Propaganda Chief, Joseph Goebbels, was partly right when he said that a lie repeated often enough will eventually be accepted as truth. The Mahama boys are using anonymous individuals writing under pseudonyms who cannot persuade thinking people. Only people with track records can turn the tide.

Asterix In the Asterix comic book series, specifically ‘Asterix and the Roman Agent’, there was a Roman official ‘Tortuous Convolvulus’, a natural born troublemaker with a special ability to cause strife and division and stir up trouble between anyone at any place at any time. His stock-in-trade was to “prey on distrust and hidden grievances.” In the series, Julius Caesar, the Emperor of Rome, used him as a tool of psychological warfare against the Gauls, to stir up as much trouble as possible, in their midst.

It’s sad to say that in Ghana today, we have too many “tortuous convulsus” in the NDC for comfort. But why would we, as party members, be doing this to ourselves? In the case of Asterix, the Romans and the Gauls were enemies. Have we now become enemies with ourselves as party members because one does not support Mahama in the same political party, and so on? So they must be targeted with insults. Forgetting that Dr. Kwabena Duffuor’s entry into the NDC presidential race has made the party more attractive to the corporate world and the downtrodden The Duffuor campaign and message encouraging Ghanaians to register for and obtain NDC cards has paid off. The NDC is more attractive because people like Dr. Duffuor joined the registration drive. Today, those who sent President Mills to his grave are the same people that President John Mahama associates with. He’s allegedly using and sponsoring them for national executive positions in the NDC Party.

President Mahama, even as a vice president, never defended his predecessor when they used his ill health against him. He’s not on record. After the death of your predecessor, they have all risen under you and have become very powerful members. As mature as the NDC is, nobody has antagonized them and has left them in peace to operate freely. And even though they had the temerity to contest party positions and won, let it remain so. Kindly advise your so-called media gunmen to hold fire. We are not playing “Fonkar” games here. They shouldn’t try it on Dr. Kwabena Duffuor. Before the death of President Mills, there was no end to the absurdity among some party members over his health status. The whole thing went from ridiculous to downright foolish. Just when we thought the country was emerging from the winter of absurdity, we have a set of people who are bent on clinging to political power by all means and want to go unopposed. We have been fed lies by a slew of charlatans who are either unaware of how things are done in the party or completely unconcerned about the consequences of recklessness of the type never seen in the party.

The Mahama handlers need to stop it. Nobody has the divine right to rule Ghana. Their subtle threat at the party is not lost on us. We are not afraid, and neither will we retreat. retreat. Dr. Kwabena Duffuor will break the shackles of mediocrity in the NDC and Ghana. We want to throw away these leeches forever.

Currently, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) badly needs a leadership that can rescue the party “from the depth of chronic indiscipline, disorder, and decadence that is destroying it.” There seems to be a failed attempt by the camp of former President Mahama, who is not being politically calculative, to get the various regions to give former President Mahama another chance to lead the party for the fourth time as a flagbearer. God’s time is the best
