Republicans vow to replace Ginsburg with Trump pick

Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell vowed to put President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee to a vote within hours of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death being announced, sparking outrage among Democrats.

Mr McConnell said he would act swiftly, despite the election six weeks away.

In 2016, he blocked President Barack Obama’s pick for the court on the grounds it was an election year.

Joe Biden has insisted a replacement should only take place after the poll.

Ginsburg, 87, died on Friday of metastatic pancreatic cancer at her home in Washington, DC, surrounded by her family.

The second-ever woman to sit on the Supreme Court, she had become a figurehead for liberals in the US, and was an iconic champion of women’s rights.

Thousands gathered outside the court on Friday night to pay tribute to the woman who had become affectionately known as “The Notorious RBG”.

What is the row about?

The appointment of judges in the US is a political one – which means the president gets to choose who is put forward. The Senate then votes to confirm – or reject – the choice.

Ginsburg, who served for 27 years, was one of only four liberals on the nine-seat bench. Her death means that, should the Republicans get the vote through, the balance of power would shift decisively towards the conservatives.

Mr Trump, who has already chosen two Supreme Court justices during his presidency, is well aware that getting his nominee in will mean conservatives will have control over key decisions for decades to come. Justices can serve for life, unless they decide to retire.

a rally on Friday – before he learned of Ginsburg’s death – he told the crowd whoever won the election “will get one, two, three or four Supreme Court justices”, saying November’s vote was going to be “the most important” in US history.

Mr McConnell said in his statement – which included a tribute to Ginsburg – that “President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate”.

The senator had argued in 2016 that “the American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice” which meant “this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president”.

But now he says the Senate was within its rights to act because it was Republican-controlled, and Mr Trump is a Republican president.

Audio: Some accidents are caused by curses – GPRTU Chair

The National Chairman of Ghana Private Road Transport Union-GPRTU, Kwame Kumah has claimed some of the accidents that occur on our roads are caused by curses invoked on some errant drivers and passengers.

Speaking on Atinka TV morning show dubbed “Ghana Nie , Kwame Kumah said most passengers are cursed for several reasons and this sometimes has great effect on other passengers when they board same vehicle with other passengers.

Mr Kwame Kumah early this year noted that the ban on night travelling will not reduce car crashes in the country.

According to him, even though some of the road accidents could be attributed to the deplorable state of roads, there is no doubt that most of these unfortunate incidents are caused by curses placed on some drivers and passengers.

Alcohol not solution to insomnia – Doctor

Medical Doctor and Chief Executive Officer for Rofika herbal hospital, Dr. Mary Ofei, has cautioned persons abusing alcohol as a solution to insomnia to desist from the act.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder . The condition can be short-term (acute) or can last a long time (chronic). It may also come and go.

Acute insomnia lasts from 1 night to a few weeks. Insomnia is chronic when it happens at least 3 nights a week for 3 months or more.

Speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Dr. Mary Ofei, said resorting to alcohol will only compound the situation and not help cure the insomnia.

Dr. Mary Ofei explained that people who use alcohol as an alternative drug to help them sleep at night tend to develop other complications.

“This is the problem! A lot of people think alcohol is the solution to insomnia but it’s not true. Alcohol can make you sleep for a while, but it cannot make you stay asleep and so the assertion that alcohol is the solution to insomnia is utterly wrong,” she explained.

Asked the appropriate meal which helps one to sleep well at night, Medical Doctor and Chief Executive Officer for Rofika Herbal Hospital, Dr. Mary Ofei noted that individuals have to find out meals that work better for them and then stick to them.

Citing beans and coffee, as examples, Dr. Mary Ofei said there are some people who find it difficult who take them.

Contempt case: Court gives Kennedy Agyapong another grace period

The Accra High Court has given the NPP Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, another grace period over his alleged contemptuous comments in which he described the judge as “stupid”.

At today’s hearing, Justice Amos Wuntah Wuni adjourned the case to Friday, September 25, 2020, to allow lawyers for the MP to present legal arguments on why the court should stay proceedings until the Supreme Court rules on a judicial review application in relation to the case.

Lead Counsel for the MP, Mr Kwame Gyan, argued that the court must halt the case until the Supreme Court determines whether or not the High Court, presided over by Justice Wuni had jurisdiction over the matter.

Justice Wuni had earlier ruled that he was minded to continue with the case but gave the lawyers the opportunity to present legal arguments on Friday.

Mr Agyapong’s alleged comments were made in connection with a land matter in which Susan Bandoh and Christopher Akuetteh Kotei had sued him (Kennedy Agyapong), Ibrahim Jaja, Nana Yaw Duodu aka Sledge and the Inspector General of Police.

While the case was still at the Land Division of the High Court (Land Court 12), the MP allegedly scandalised the court on a programme aired on NET2 TV and Oman FM on September 2, this year.

A court order signed on September 9, by Justice Wuni said, “I hereby summon the said Kennedy Ohene Agyapong per a warrant issued under my hand and seal to appear before the High Court (Land Court 12) on Monday, September 14, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. to show cause why he should not be severely punished for contempt if the matters are proven against him to the satisfaction of the court.”

The MP was expected to appear in court on Monday, September 14 to show why he should not be punished for contempt, but he failed to do so.

It came up in court that the court’s bailiff could not serve the MP with the summons order as all efforts by the court including channelling the summons through Parliament to be served on the MP proved futile.

In view of the difficulties mentioned above, Justice Wuni ordered that the summons be served on the MP through substituted service, a method of service allowed by law if personal service was proving problematic.

Per the orders of the court, the summons should be posted on the court’s notice board, as well as “a conspicuous place at Net 2 Television and Oman FM,” the MP’s media organisations and where he allegedly made the contemptuous statement.

Justice Wuni ordered that the summons should be at the designated places for three days, together with a hearing notice, while the MP must appear before the court on Friday, September 18.

Supreme Court

The MP yesterday (Thursday, September 17) asked the Supreme Court to stop contempt proceedings against him by an Accra High Court.

Lawyers for the MP filed a judicial review application at the apex court today, barely 24 hours after he was supposed to appear before the High Court and explain why he should not be punished for allegedly describing the judge as “stupid”

The MP wants the Supreme Court to prohibit the High Court from hearing the contempt case and also quash the order of summons for him to appear before the court on the basis that the particular court (Land Court 12)that summoned him had no jurisdiction to do so.

Different court

In his affidavit in support, the MP avers that his comments were not against Justice Amos Wuntah Wuni of Land Court 12 but was rather against a different judge in another matter at Labour Court 2, for which he said had duly apologized.

“The words uttered which I deem uncomplimentary and I have since apologized were not directed at the Court, presided over by His Lordship Amos Wuntah Wuni, the Court is not seized with jurisdiction to order the applicant to appear and to answer why he should not be severely punished for contempt of court,” the MP said in his affidavit in support.

It was based on the case at the Supreme Court that the MP’s lawyers want the High Court to stay proceedings until the final determination of the case at the apex court.

Voters Exhibition Exercise begins today

The Voters Exhibition Exercise has began today in all 33,367 Exhibition Centres across the country.

The exercise is to display the Provisional Voters Register for public inspection and correction at designated Exhibition Centres throughout the country from Friday, the 18th Day of September, 2020 to Friday, the 25th Day of September, 2020 from 7.00am to 6.00 pm each day including Saturday and Sunday.

The Exhibition of the Provisional Voters Register will take place simultaneously at all 33,367 Exhibition Centres across the country.

Speaking at the let the citizens know series, the EC Chairperson, Mrs Jean Mensa urged all registered voters to take advantage of the exercise to verify their details.

The EC said from its experience over the years, participation in the Voters Exhibition Exercise has been low, stating that citizens have not found it worth their while to visit the Exhibition Centres to check their details on the Provisional Voters Register.

“We wish to emphasize that the Exhibition Exercise is an important aspect of the entire registration and election process. It is therefore important that voters take the time to check their details,” the EC stated.

It explained that the Voters Register as it stands is provisional, adding that this means that it is not final; that is why the law recognized the need for an exhibition process to enable all registered voters check and ensure that the necessary corrections and omissions are effected before the register is certified.

“The Voters Register will only be deemed final after the Exhibition Exercise is completed and after authentication by the Magistrates who for the purpose of this Exercise serve as District Registration Review Officers (DRRO’s),” EC said.

The EC said in a bid to ensure the safety and security of its stakeholders and to make life easier for all prospective voters, the Electoral Commission has deployed a Mobile Telephoning System, also known the SMS to allow prospective voters to check their details using their mobile phones for a fee of 30 pesewas.

The EC has stated that those who flouted the registration rules during the compilation of the new voters register cannot vote during the upcoming elections.

According to her, those who engaged themselves in double registration and those who are not Ghanaians but took part in the exercise would not be allowed to vote.
