Ofori Atta returns in May : South Tongu MP attributes compliance to OSP’s Media Actions

Fitch Ofori Atta

Member of Parliament for South Tongu, Hon. Maxwell Lukutor, has defended the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) decision to publicly declare former Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta a fugitive, arguing that the move forced him to respond and cooperate with the investigation.

The MP made these remarks during an exclusive interview on Bullet TV’s morning show, Target.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) launched an investigation into Ken Ofori Atta regarding alleged financial misconduct.

However, Ofori-Atta, who had been invited for questioning, left the country and later wrote to the OSP stating that he was out of Ghana indefinitely. This led the Special Prosecutor to invoke his powers to declare him a fugitive, a move that sparked debate among legal and political commentators.

While some critics argued that the OSP acted too hastily in making the declaration, Maxwell Lukutor insists that the action was necessary to prevent Ofori Atta from evading accountability.

In his interview, Lukutor criticized Ofori-Atta’s initial refusal to cooperate, stating that no one is above the law.

“We have heard of similar cases in the past where individuals simply ignored investigations. How can you be under investigation and then leave the country indefinitely? That suggests you do not want to be investigated,” he stated.

According to Lukutor, if Ofori-Atta was genuinely seeking medical treatment abroad, he should have provided a clear timeline for his return.

“Everybody goes for medical reviews, and there are always timelines, if one surgery is done, another follows after six weeks. But in this case, he initially claimed he would be unavailable indefinitely, only to later write that he would return by May 31. That alone shows he was avoiding accountability until the OSP took action,” he argued.

The South Tongu MP believes that the OSP’s public declaration was the catalyst that compelled Ofori-Atta to formally acknowledge the investigation and provide a return date.

“Before now, even when the majority MPs wanted him removed, the President silenced them. It was as if the Finance Ministry was being run like a family business, where no one could question decisions. That arrogance was what led to this situation,” Lukutor asserted.

He further stated that the OSP had no choice but to exercise its full powers, as allowing Ofori-Atta to dictate the terms of his cooperation would have undermined the rule of law.

“If the OSP had waited, nothing would have changed. The law must work, and that’s exactly what happened. Now, he has been forced to comply,” he added.

With Ofori-Atta now scheduled to return by May 31, the OSP is expected to resume its investigations.

Meanwhile, legal experts remain divided on whether the OSP’s actions were excessive or necessary in ensuring compliance.

Akwatia MP’s Contempt Conviction : Lawyer Tettey blames Legal Team

A Private legal practitioner, Nii Tetteh Tettey Esq. has blamed the legal team of the Member of Parliament for Akwatia for failing to properly defend him, leading to an issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest over contempt of court by the Koforidua High Court.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s The Agenda Show with Bernard Lav, Tettey argued that the MP’s absence from court could have been managed if his lawyers had acted responsibly.

“Let’s assume the MP was in Parliament, but were his lawyers also in Parliament? Their absence contributed to the court’s decision to issue the warrant,” he stated.

Tettey further cautioned the MP to respect the authority of the judiciary, warning that continued defiance could damage his political career.

“He should humble himself before the court because Parliament as an institution will not tolerate any MP disregarding the judiciary. Even the Speaker of Parliament respects the court and would not encourage such actions,” he added.

The court’s ruling highlights the legal and political consequences of failing to comply with judicial directives, with legal experts calling for better coordination between political figures and their legal representatives.

Ghana West African Medical Mission and Dada Foundation construct 100 boreholes for villages

The Ghana West African Medical Mission in collaboration with the Dada Foundation, a subsidiary of the Wisconsin International University College, Ghana that supervises the corporate social responsibilities has constructed almost 100 boreholes in villages or deprived areas free of charge.

The Ghana West African Medical Mission with the Dada Foundation has also sunk six toilet facilities to schools that were in need of it.

Aside from the above, the organization has provided scholarships for 20 needy but brilliant students to study Nursing at the Wisconsin International University College Ghana.

This is part of the organisations’ plan to provide portable and easily accessible water to people living in deprived areas.

The gesture also forms part of the Corporate Social Responsibilities of the two organisations.

Some of the regions that have benefited from this projects include the Ashanti, Eastern, Volta and the Greater Accra Regions.

Speaking in an interview with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Wisconsin International University College, Ghana, who is also an Executive Member of the Dada Foundation, Jacob Fynn said despite constructing almost 100 boreholes in villages, the organisations will continue the projects to provide clean/ quality and accessible water to remote areas, especially in the villages across the country.

He said for those villages that do not have boreholes, the organisation sends the workers who drill the boreholes to fetch water from the villages that have benefitted from the project to supply them with water.

How it started

Mr Jacob Fynn explained that in 2018, Ghana West African Medical Mission came to Ghana to organise free health screening and administer and donate medicines to those who needed it in the villages.

Aside from the health support, the organisation which is also into ministry preached the word of God to the people.

During the time, he said the organisation observed that most of the diseases found amongst the people who benefitted from the health screening was caused by poor access to proper sanitation and lack of potable water.

Due to this, Mr Jacob Fynn said the Ghana West African Medical Mission decided to construct boreholes and toilet facilities for villages.

After constructing a few, the project was paused due to the covid-19 outbreak.

However, after covid, Mr Jacob Fynn said the Ghana West African Medical Mission connected with the Dada Foundation to re-commence the drilling of boreholes and support the villages with other needs.

He noted that the focus of the Dada foundation is healthcare(Mother and child), education and business innovation.

Mr Jacob Fynn noted that the focus of the Dada Foundation aligned with that of the Ghana West African Medical Mission and therefore welcomed the initiative.

According to him, the Dada Foundation helps to identify the areas that need clean water and send workers to drill the boreholes while the Ghana West African Medical Mission and supporters fund the projects.

Meanwhile, Mr Jacob Fynn said the Dada Foundation is open to work with organisations, individuals or groups who want to help Ghanaians in that regard, noting that there is a lot of work to be done and cannot be done by one organisation.

Ghana records over 120 meningitis cases, 16 deaths – Mintah Akandoh

meningitis

Ghana has recorded over 120 cases of meningitis, with 16 deaths as of Sunday, February 16, Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has told Parliament.

Updating lawmakers on the outbreak on Tuesday, February 18, Mr. Akandoh said the Upper West Region remains the hardest hit, with 29 patients currently receiving treatment.

The most affected districts include Wa Municipal, Nadowli, Wa West, Jirapa, and Nandom.

The Health Minister acknowledged that meningitis outbreaks are common in Ghana’s northern regions due to the country’s location within the “Meningitis Belt” of Africa, which stretches from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east.

He added that the disease is most prevalent during the dry and dusty harmattan season, from October to March.

He explained that two main pathogens—Listeria and Streptococcus pneumoniae—are responsible for meningitis outbreaks in Ghana. While vaccines exist for Listeria, they are ineffective against Streptococcus pneumoniae, the strain currently causing the outbreak in the Upper West Region.

In response, the government has deployed a national team of health experts to support regional and district health authorities.

He said treatment for affected patients has been made free, and emergency operations centers have been activated to coordinate the response.

“Additional supplies of antibiotics have been secured, and public awareness campaigns are being intensified to educate the public on symptoms and encourage early treatment.

Community leaders have also been engaged to help spread information, while the World Health Organization (WHO) has deployed experts to assist Ghana in managing the outbreak, the minister stated.

Akandoh noted that these measures are already showing positive results, with a gradual decline in new cases in the Upper West Region.

Cholera kills 49 in Ghana, 719 confirmed out of 6,145 cases

cholera

Ghana has recorded 6,145 cholera cases, with 719 confirmed and 49 deaths as of February 13, 2025, according to Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, February 18, Akandoh stated that the outbreak, which began in October 2024 in Ada West, Greater Accra Region, has spread to multiple regions, including Central, Western, Ashanti, and Eastern.

According to the minister Central Region has been the hardest hit in recent weeks, particularly in the districts of Agona West and Effutu. These areas have reported 133 new cases in the past week alone, with 23 hospital admissions and two fatalities, he stated.

Despite the severity of the outbreak, Akandoh noted a decline in new cases, stating, “The situation is improving, with active cases now concentrated in the Central Region only.

“As of February 16, 28 active cases remain under medical care in the region, with Effutu reporting 18 cases, Cape Coast six, and Agona West four.

Government response and public health measures

Akandoh outlined the government’s response plan, stressing enhanced surveillance, strengthened laboratory capacity, environmental assessments, public awareness campaigns, and the establishment of cholera treatment centers.

The MOH, he said in collaboration with healthcare workers and international health partners, has intensified efforts to control the outbreak.

In addition, he said surveillance has been heightened to quickly identify and manage new cases, with health officials conducting active community case studies and contact tracing to prevent further spread.

“Laboratory testing capacity has also been strengthened, ensuring swift confirmation of suspected cholera cases. Meanwhile, environmental assessments have been carried out in affected districts to identify risk factors such as poor sanitation and unsafe water sources that may be fueling the outbreak”, the minister stated.

Also in response to the crisis, Akandoh said public awareness campaigns have been launched nationwide, educating communities on cholera prevention, proper hygiene, and safe food handling.

Additionally, he said specialised cholera treatment centers have been established in key areas, where healthcare workers have received extensive training on case management, infection prevention, and control measures.

One of the most significant interventions, he noted has been the deployment of oral cholera vaccines (OCV) in high-risk areas.

According to Akandoh, the vaccination campaign has so far covered the Central and Western Regions, reaching 596,205 people—representing 92.9% of the targeted population.

“These vaccines aim to protect vulnerable populations and reduce further outbreaks. As of February 17, vaccination campaigns in the Central and Western Regions have reached 596,205 people, covering 92.9% of the targeted population,” Akandoh stated.

Challenges and ongoing efforts

Despite progress, Akandoh acknowledged ongoing challenges, including poor sanitation, limited access to clean water, and inadequate hygiene practices. “Cholera requires a multisectoral approach to be fully controlled,” he said, urging local authorities to prioritize long-term improvements in sanitation and public health infrastructure.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling the outbreak and preventing further fatalities. “In the long term, we must enhance sanitation systems, food and water safety, and personal hygiene practices to prevent cholera from recurring,” he added.
