No brutalities recorded in voter register demonstrations in my time-President Akufo Adddo

0

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says the Tamale demonstration undertaken by some opposition political parties regarding the voter’s register passed off without any incident, a clear departure from the unfortunate past.
According to President Akufo-Addo, “five (5) years ago, we had demonstrations in Accra calling for a new, credible register, in which some citizens were maimed and brutalised. Indeed, a citizen, young Justice Adzakuma, lost his eye, and died last year. May God bless his soul.”
He continued, “Today, we are having peaceful demonstrations in Tamale, this time protesting against the decision of the Electoral Commission, whose constitutional remit it is to compile an electoral register, to have now a new, improved register. Fortunately, in this new era, there are no casualties. God bless Ghana.”
The President made this known on Tuesday, 14th January, 2020, when he delivered the opening address at the 71st New Year School, at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon, on the theme “Attaining Ghana Beyond Aid: Challenges and Prospects.”
Stressing that,“Ghana Beyond Aid is meant to be more than a slogan”, President Akufo-Addo stated that, “it is meant to change our mindset from one of dependency, to one of achieving our destiny. It is meant to put us in charge of our own affairs, and make us truly independent.”
He, thus, urged the Ghanaian people to, “believe in ourselves, we can do it, especially in this new decade, in this new century, in which hope, optimism and progress will define the unfolding Ghanaian reality.”
Describing the terrorist outrages taking place in the Sahel and in northern Nigeria as “the greatest security challenge facing the nations of ECOWAS”, President Akufo-Addo told the gathering that Armed Forces and security agencies have to be on full alert to confront this unwanted menace.
“We are the authors of the Accra Initiative, which seeks to strengthen co-ordination and co-operation between the security and intelligence agencies of Benin, Togo, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Ghana, who have lately been joined by Mali and Nige,” he said.
The President added that,“We are required also to deny the terrorists and violent extremists any space by marshalling the rapid development of the areas in the northern parts of our country, which provide the most obvious targets of recruitment. We have to employ a comprehensive counter terrorism strategy.”

NDC takes demonstration against new voter register to Ashanti Region

0

The opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) is set to embark on another demonstration in the Ashanti Region come 21st January, 2020.
The Demonstration, dubbed,”Yempene” is to protest the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to compile a new voters’ register for the upcoming elections while in an election year.
Already, a similar Demonstration has been held in the Northern Region, drawing huge crowds to indicate how those in the Region, especially NDC supporters did not agree to the decision by the EC.
The “TIKUSAHI Demonstration” saw the NDC sympathisers burn tyres, while they marched through the Central Business District of Tamale, chanting ‘war songs’ against the compilation of a new voters’ register by the EC.

Despite their attempt to resist the compilation of the new voter’s ID Card, the EC has however, turned a deaf ear to the NDC and is bent on executing its plan.
Meanwhile, the party still stands by its opinion that the current voters’ register is credible, and therefore it should be used in 2020 just as it was used in 2016.
Speaking on the Morning Agenda, a segment on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie, the Former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Joseph Yamin was optimistic that huge crowds will converge in the region to show how they are disappointed in the NPP government and the EC.
According to him, the crowd that will converge in the Ashanti Region for the demonstration will be more than that of the Northern Region.
“It is not a National demonstration, it is regional and therefore we are not busing people from other regions to the Ashanti Region. However who ever wants to join is allowed to participate,” he said.
However, he added that there will be buses available in the Ashanti Region on the said day to convey those who are interested to the venue.

Boy, 11, in court for killing brother

0

A court in Nakuru has directed that an 11-year-old boy accused of stabbing his brother to death following a dispute over a phone charger be remanded in a children’s home for three days.
Principal Magistrate Bernard Mararo issued the orders on Monday after the prosecution requested for time to consult on whether the Standard Five pupil should be charged.
While the police insist on charging the minor with manslaughter, his lawyer seeks to have the court dismiss the charges on grounds that the boy has no capacity to be charged.
According to the lawyer, the law provides that a person below 12 years has no capacity to commit a crime and, consequently, the boy did not know that he should not kill his brother.
“In view of the submissions, the prosecution is granted time to respond to the counsel of the subject. The minor [should] be remanded at the Nakuru Children’s Home pending a social inquiry report,” ruled Mr Mararo.
The minor is alleged to have killed his 15-year-old brother on December 31, 2019 at their home in the outskirts of Nakuru town.
The two brothers are said to have picked a quarrel after the minor disconnected a charger from his elder brother’s mobile phone.
Neighbours said the boys’ parents had travelled to their rural home for Christmas, leaving them in the custody of their uncle.
The court will make its decision on whether or not to charge the boy on January 16, 2020.
