Theresa May condemns Tony Blair's new Brexit vote call

Theresa May has attacked one of her predecessors – accusing Tony Blair of "undermining" the Brexit talks by calling for another referendum.

She called his comments an "insult to the office he once held" and said MPs could not "abdicate responsibility" to deliver Brexit by holding a new poll.

Mr Blair said MPs might back a new vote if "none of the other options work".

It comes after Labour MPs who support the idea met Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington to make their case.

About 10 MPs met Mr Lidington on Thursday to argue for another public vote and make it clear there was no other government plan they could support.

But many senior Labour figures are deeply uneasy about endorsing another referendum.

And the government is opposed to any further referendum, saying the public made a clear choice when they voted in 2016 to leave by a margin of 51.9% to 48.1%.

BBC political correspondent Chris Mason said Mrs May's criticism of Mr Blair was striking for its anger.

Mrs May said: "For Tony Blair to go to Brussels and seek to undermine our negotiations by advocating for a second referendum is an insult to the office he once held and the people he once served.

"We cannot, as he would, abdicate responsibility for this decision.

"Parliament has a democratic duty to deliver what the British people voted for."

She added that there were "too many people who want to subvert the process for their own political interests – rather than acting in the national interest".

MPs were due to vote on Mrs May's Brexit deal on Tuesday, but it was postponed when the prime minister admitted it would have been "rejected by a significant margin".

After postponing the vote in Parliament, Mrs May travelled to Brussels to make a special plea to EU leaders, in a bid to make her deal more acceptable to MPs.

However, the EU said there could be clarification but not renegotiation.

Many of Mrs May's MPs are concerned that the "backstop" – which is aimed at preventing a hard border in Northern Ireland – would keep the UK tied to EU rules and limit its ability to strike trade deals.

Education Secretary Damian Hinds has told the BBC a second referendum would not end the deadlock over Brexit but might simply extend the impasse.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, he urged politicians to back the PM's plan, describing it as "balanced" and the "best of both worlds".

Mr Hinds accused some in Parliament of "wishful thinking" in believing they will get something closer to their own view by rejecting Mrs May's deal, adding: "There is really no reason to believe that's true."

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said the UK will "flourish and prosper" even if it leaves the EU with no deal.

"We've faced much bigger challenges in our history," he said.

"But we shouldn't pretend that there wouldn't be disruption, there wouldn't be risk, and there wouldn't be impact and that's why as a responsible government we have to make all the preparations necessary."

He also said he wanted a "crack" at succeeding Mrs May after the PM takes the country through "this challenging next few months".

His comments come after Mrs May made it clear she would step down before the next general election – due in 2022.

How to cut costs this Christmas

Christmas is a time for families to unite and spend quality time together, but it can also be an incredibly stressful period. If not carefully avoided, there’s always a danger of overspending, blowing the budget and throwing your household into financial dire straits come January. Yet with some small tweaks and an understanding of the tricks that supermarkets use, it’s always possible – and sometimes easy – to keep Christmas costs massively down. We asked the team at MoneySavingExpert.com to share top tips for the festive period…

1. Downshifting

Many go all out at Christmas, buying the best of everything to treat friends and family. But is that food product really the best or is that simply what a marketeer wants you to believe? The packaging might look more opulent, but look at the ingredients list to see if you can tell the difference. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, try ‘downshifting’ some standard family favourites – go from branded to supermarket own-brand and see if they notice. You may be surprised by the results. If they don’t notice a difference, stick with the cheaper product.

2. Look down.

Supermarkets try all sorts of tactics to make us spend more, but there’s a simple trick to finding better-value items. More expensive items are usually placed at average eye-level, often with a better-value pack of the same branded product on the bottom shelf. It may mean initially paying more for a bigger pack, but you’ll get more for your money gram for gram.

3. Coupons

Supermarket coupons are a really great way to slash the cost of your shop. Websites like SuperSavvyMe and CaringEveryday offer money-off printable coupons direct from the manufacturer. You’ll also find coupons in free supermarket magazines, on promotional packets and online.

4. Online codes for new shoppers

If you haven’t tried online supermarket shopping before, there are plenty of introductory codes around to entice you in. These include offers such as 30% off your first two shops via discount codes, so it may be worth trying this when you're planning your more expensive supermarket shops. Simply search for the relevant supermarket and ‘discount vouchers’ to find the latest introductory deals.

5. Make a list

It sounds so obvious, but one of the best ways to save money while shopping is to make a list, create a budget and stick to it. Meal plans are another great way to ensure you don’t go off course.

6. Don’t shop hungry.

Again, a no-brainer for some. Shopping on an empty belly can really affect what you buy and will make sticking to that list a lot more difficult.

7. Compare prices. If money is really tight this Christmas, you may have to go to more than one supermarket to get the best deals. Online tools like MySupermarket or Idealo.co.uk enable you to compare product prices before you leave the house, so you know you’re getting the best deal at the best price.

8. Beware of quick ‘pick up’ shops

You know the ones, where you pop in to pick up a quick pint of milk. The temptation is to grab a basket and fill it. Don’t pick up the basket! Just buy your milk and go.

9. Look out for special offers and ‘yellow stickers’

Over the next few weeks, look out for special offers and discounted ‘yellow sticker’ items that you can pop in the freezer for the festive period. Many items, including grated cheese, meat, soups and even cake can be frozen to use at a later date. Just ensure the food is within its ‘use by’ date before freezing.

10. Check out alternative aisles

We found near-identical items in different aisles for very different prices. We found 300 cotton buds for 55p in the baby aisle but 200 cotton buds for £1.50 in the cosmetics aisle. A 100g bag of ground ginger was 50p in the world food aisle, while in the herbs and spices aisle the equivalent was £1.68 per 100g. Whip out the calculator and get an understanding of roughly how much a product is per gram – then keep your eyes peeled in unexpected places.

Court rules Obamacare is unconstitutional

A federal judge in the US state of Texas has ruled that a key part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), better known as Obamacare, is unconstitutional.

Twenty states argued the whole law was invalidated by a change in tax rules last year which eliminated a penalty for not having health insurance.

President Donald Trump said the ruling was great news for America.

The law's provisions will, however, remain in place until an appeal is heard at the US Supreme Court.

President Trump promised to dismantle Barack Obama's landmark 2010 healthcare law, which was designed to make medical cover affordable for the many Americans who had been priced out of the market.

But despite his Republican Party having majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, the ACA is still operating.

However, in 2017 Congress did repeal the requirement – the so-called individual mandate – that people buy health insurance or pay a tax penalty.

Mr Trump took to Twitter following the judge's ruling in Texas.

He also urged incoming Democratic Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer and Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to "pass a STRONG law that provides GREAT healthcare".

The ruling came a day before the deadline for Obamacare enrolment for the coming year.

Two Republicans – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and his Wisconsin counterpart Brad Schimel led the legal challenge.

Sitting in Fort Worth, US District Judge Reed O'Connor noted that a $1.5tn tax bill passed by Congress in 2017 eliminated the tax penalties which anyone who failed to obtain health insurance had to pay.

He ruled that the individual mandate was now unconstitutional.

As the individual mandate was an "essential" element of the ACA, the whole of Obamacare was therefore unconstitutional, Judge O'Connor said.

He said his ruling was concerned with the intentions of the 2010 and 2017 Congresses.

"The former enacted the ACA. The latter sawed off the last leg it stood on."

Ms Pelosi described the ruling as "cruel" and "absurd" and said it would be repealed.

She said it exposed "the monstrous endgame of Republicans' all-out assault on people with pre-existing conditions and Americans' access to affordable health care".

Mr Schumer, meanwhile, said the ruling appeared "to be based on faulty legal reasoning and hopefully it will be overturned".

He said that if it was upheld in the higher courts "it will be a disaster for tens of millions of American families, especially for people with pre-existing conditions".

The decision is almost certain to be challenged in the US Supreme Court.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said that the law would remain in place for the time being, pending further legal developments.

Meanwhile, the White House called on Congress to replace Obamacare with an affordable healthcare system which protects people with pre-existing conditions.

But other states have argued that eliminating Obamacare would harm millions of Americans, and pending any appeal the landmark health care law remains in place.

US Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said: "If this awful ruling is upheld in the higher courts, itwill be a disaster for tens of millions of American families."

Nigerian military lifts Unicef ban after 'spy' row

Nigeria's military has revoked its earlier decision to suspend activities of the UN children's agency Unicef in the north-east of the country.

The military said this came after "extensive deliberations" during emergency talks with Unicef officials.

Earlier on Friday, the army had accused the agency of spying for Islamist militants in the restive region.

Millions of people displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency in the north-east are dependent on humanitarian aid.

In a statement, the army said that it had lifted a three-month ban on Unicef's operations.

It said that during the meeting it urged "Unicef representatives to ensure they share information with relevant authorities whenever induction or training of new staff is being conducted".

The statement came just hours after the military had accused the UN agency of spying for Islamists.

"[Unicef staff] train and deploy spies who support the insurgents and their sympathisers," the army said.

These were "unwholesome practices that could further jeopardise the fight against terrorism and insurgency," it added.

This is not the first time the army has taken dramatic action against the UN agency.

In April, the military declared three Unicef workers persona non grata, following leaked allegations of sexual abuse by Nigerian soldiers. That decision was also swiftly reversed.

Nigeria's north-east has been devastated by a decade-long insurgency by Boko Haram and its splinter group Islamic State West Africa

More than 30,000 people have been killed and many more driven from their homes.

Salah named BBC African Footballer of the Year

Egypt and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been voted BBC African Footballer of the Year for the second time in a row.

The 26-year-old beat Medhi Benatia, Kalidou Koulibaly, Sadio Mane and Thomas Partey to the prize.

The Premier League's player of the year scored 44 goals in 52 games for Liverpool last season.

"It's a great feeling to win again. I'm happy and I would like to win it also next year!" said Salah.

As well as inspiring his club to the Champions League final, Salah scored twice for Egypt at this year's World Cup, having netted both goals in the match which took his country to the tournament for the first time since 1990.

"There have been many good moments in 2018," he added. "The game against Roma at Anfield [Champions League semi-final first leg] was unbelievable. I'm scoring goals and helping the team to get the points to be top of the league. That's always a great feeling."

Salah said his aim for 2019 is "to win something with the club so everyone is excited".

"I try to push myself every day to help the team win something," he added.

The BBC received more than 650,000 votes this year – a record for the award.

Salah becomes the first player since Nigerian Jay-Jay Okocha to win in consecutive years.

The former Chelsea player signed for the Reds from Roma in the summer of 2017. He scored 15 goals and made 11 others for the Italian side in 2016-17 as they finished second in Serie A, their best league placing for seven years.

In a phenomenal start to his Liverpool career, Salah scored 19 goals in his first 24 appearances. He went on to beat the previous record of 31 goals in a 38-game Premier League season shared by Luis Suarez for the Reds in 2013-14, Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United in 2007-08 and Alan Shearer for Newcastle in 1995-96.

Jose Mourinho: Man Utd 'far' from being built in my image

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says his team are "far" from being built in his own image as he prepares to face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

United are 16 points behind leaders Liverpool, having won just one of their previous five Premier League games.

Mourinho, who took over as manager in May 2016, conceded: "We have doubts about everything.

"But we are going with the players we have available and a team capable of going there to fight for the victory."Mourinho won the EFL Cup and Europa League in his first season in charge at Old Trafford.

Since then, the team's style has been questioned and there have been criticisms of his record signing Paul Pogba, who cost £89m and Romelu Lukaku, who cost £75m.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been praised for the way in which his team is playing, but they are yet to win a trophy under the German, who took over in October 2015.

However, he guided them to the 2016 League Cup and Europa League final, and last season's Champions League final, where Liverpool lost 3-1 to Real Madrid.

When asked if the amount of money his north-west rivals had spent last season was the difference between the two teams, Mourinho replied: "It's not just about spending money and reinforcing the squad, a football team is more than that.

"It's like a house. it's not just about buying the furniture, you have to do work, you spend money on the best possible furniture and then you're ready to live in an amazing house."

Asked if winning trophies matter, Mourinho said: "I think trophies matter, it matters, especially when you have the potential to fight for trophies and especially when you clearly say the objective is to win the trophy.

"I think sometimes to just say it is not very intelligent, but when you have the potential, you have nothing to hide, you know from day one your potential and your desire has a relation with the potential."

Let’s support Ghanaian businesses – Zoomlion Boss appeals

Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyapong is appealing to the Ghanaians to support local businesses to grow and flourish.

He profoundly noted that the Ghanaian is committed to doing what is right and is hardworking, thus we need to give them necessary assistance and encourage them to make a difference.

“Every Ghanaian has done every well and I cherished them…..the Ghanaian I know is a very zealous person, a hardworking person, the Ghanaian needs to be supported. This is our continent and only Africans can change the fortunes of these country,” he said.

Speaking with the media after the observation of the 12th Thanksgiving Service of the Jospong and Zoomlion Group for the year 2018, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyapong called for private sector support even though government continues to do so as seen with waste management.

“Let us help the Tobincos, Kwame Despites, Dr Ofori and all other Ghanaians,” he appealed.

With the background of starting the Zoomlion work with a tricycle in 2006, they have grown into a huge waste management firm with an integrated system that collects, treats and recycle the waste.

Today, they have heavy waste management trucks that collects filth across the country. As if that was not enough, they have turns waste into a dignified business where all Ghanaians want to be part.
“We have been able to turn waste into wealth and dignified it to the extent that people are now interested to deal with waste management,” he added.

According to him, Zoomlion currently has 45,000 workers with over 200,000 jobs created and also operational in Sierra Leone, Zambia and Angola amongst others.

His vision, he mentioned is that every household should have a dustbin across the country and in that regard Zoomlion and Ecobank have collaborated to share one million dustbins through the district assemblies.

That would will be done concurrently with sensitization and enforcement of regulations from the assemblies to take Ghana rub shoulders with the European countries.
Ghanaian professionals who are doing well foreign countries do so because of the assistance they receive and if same is done here, the fortunes of the country would change drastically.
