Menzgold customers besiege Dzorwulu office and attempt blocking N1 highway

0

Some customers of gold dealership firm, Menzgold Ghana Limted on Monday morning besieged the Dzorwulu branch of the company in anticipation of receiving their locked-up investments.

The action by the customers followed a court ruling in Kumasi last week that said the properties of the company should be sold to pay the customers.

The court order for the auctioning of the assets of Menzgold to pay clients followed a writ filed by one Henry Darko.

Demonstration

There was a similar action last Thursday when the aggrieved customers stormed the Dzorwulu office to demand their investments just as they have been doing in the past months.

The troubled gold dealership firm has petitioned parliament to help it resolve its regulatory issues with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) so it can pay all entitlements owed its clients.

In a petition to Parliament's Finance Committee dated December 3, 2018 and signed by Corporate Manager, Offie Nana Yaw on behalf of the CEO, Menzgold said it wants members of the committee to intervene in the standoff for the benefit of its customers.

Menzgold was ordered by SEC to stop its gold vault market operations in August 2018 over regulatory infractions.

Since then, the company has been unable to pay its customers said to be in the thousands.

Police foil attempt to block highway

But for the timely intervention of the police on Monday morning, the aggrieved customers would have blocked the George Walker Bush Highway (N1 highway) which links the port city of Tema to the Central and Western regions. The Dzorwulu office of Menzgold is located adjacent the highway.

The police, led by Chief Superintendent Kwasi Ofori in charge of operations in Greater Accra prevented what the police described as a "mass suicide" attempt by running to the highway to block it.

Chief Superintendent Ofori told journalists that the police will not allow the demonstrators to flout the law and that they were there to protect lives.

"We will not allow them to commit mass suicide by blocking the highway," he said and added, "so we are doing everything possible to make sure that we de-escalate the ensuing troubles. We will not allow anybody to lead them to commit mass suicide," he said.

I am not pregnant-Dhat Gyal

0

Ernestina Afari, known as Dhat Gyal, has told Atinka TV that she is not pregnant as being speculated.

The uprising mash up musician denied the rumor when speaking on Atinka TV's entertainment show, Juke Box, Saturday 22nd December, 2018.

The mayweather hit maker said the rumor started after she released her latest single "Bra Kwaku".

"In the music video, i played the role of a pregnant girl to tell the story of how a young teenager was lured by a young man, got herself pregnant and was neglected", she said.

The video which is supposed to be an advice to young ladies to follow their dreams instead of being lured by any form of distraction was interpreted wrongly by some people leading to the pregnancy rumour.

Though the 16-year-old singer is known for mashups she also has songs like odo, Jo, welcome to Africa, Mayweather, Bra Kwaku and many more to her credit.

Somalia executes notorious Al-Shabaab bomber

0

A Somalia military court on Monday confirmed the execution by firing squad of a serial Al-Shabaab bomber. Abdulkadir Abukar Shaa’ir, 41, had been convicted of a series of bombings last year.

Shaa’ir was convicted of conducting pre-bombing surveillance, delivering explosive-laden cars, a journalist with the Voice of America, Harun Maruf reported.

His execution comes after the court found him guilty of terrorism related crimes last month. He was arrested in May 2017 whiles driving a car fitted with explosives.

He was subsequently arraigned before the military court and sentenced to death on December 6, 2017. It is not the first time authorities are executing a convicted terrorist in a country riled by Al-Shabaab insurgents.

Timeline of Shaa’ir’s known activities

March 13, 2017 was involved in car bomb outside Hotel Weheliye, killed 10 wounded 17

April 5, 2017 delivered explosive-laden car at tea shop near Ministry of sport, killed 9 wounded 10.

On May 8, 2017, conducted pre-bombing surveillance on Bar Italia Restaurant which was targetted with car bomb, killing 7 wounded 11.

May 15, 2017 he was arrested while driving a car carrying explosives which later detonated near Hamarweyne district.

Dec 6, 2017 sentenced to death

In April 2016, authorities executed a journalist convicted of helping the insurgents to kill five colleagues. Two months later a court in the northern town of Garowe sentenced 43 insurgents to death.

In late April 2017, a military court executed four men it said were behind a 2016 terrorist attack that killed 80 people. Al-Shabaab has also carried out executions in areas it governs in the country.

Somalia remains one of a handful of African countries that still apply the death penalty despite a hard fightback by activists. Most African countries have the measure on their law books but they are hardly enforced. Most death penalties are commuted to life imprisonment.

10 Amazing tips for a happy and positive New Year

0

Let’s make this year a great one, with these amazing tips that will help bring you a happy and positive New Year.

1. Change your vocabulary

The first thing you can do to make the New Year a more promising one is to stop saying words like can’t, impossible and problem. If your head is filled with negative words like that, you will never get to make the most out of the year. There is no such word as can’t, nothing is impossible, and a problem is merely a challenge. Change your mind set to a positive one and you will be amazed at how much more you can achieve.

2. Read inspirational books

Fill your reading list for the year with books that will inspire you. Read the stories of how people have faced terrible odds and survived, or tales of people who have followed their dreams. You can gain huge motivation from learning more about other people’s struggles and their determination to win.

3. Ignore the cynics

There will always be someone who wants to run down your ideas or tell what can’t be done. Just ignore these cynics and pessimists and make your own mind up. Take the decision to mix with positive, upbeat people and leave the pessimists on their own to worry about why their glass is always half empty.

4. Make your happiness your priority

It’s not surprising that some people are unhappy when so many don’t even try to make their own happiness a priority. Make this year the year that you actually start putting yourself first a bit more and doing more of the things that you enjoy. We all have commitments and responsibilities, but that shouldn’t be all that you ever worry about. Put aside some time, every week, that will be just for you.

5. Take more walks

It’s such a small thing to do, but going for walks can really make a big difference to your life. Walking is not only a good way to get a bit more exercise; it also gives you a break and allows you some time to clear your mind. Just take a short stroll on your lunch break or a short walk in the mornings. It could make all the difference to the rest of your day.

6. Get organised

Make this the year that you finally get your life organised. Clear out some of the clutter, free up more time to do positive and productive things, and start to keep to-do lists to help you prioritise your tasks. If your life is a disorganised muddle, you will spend more time firefighting, than you do getting things done. If you get organised, you will have more free time to enjoy.

7. Take control

Another thing that will sap your positivity and your happiness is letting other people dictate what you do. Don’t think of yourself as just a pawn in a game, take control and become the Queen. Choose what you want to do, who you want to be, and where you are going from here. This year could be the beginning of something great.

8. Stop complaining

Complaining achieves nothing; if you want things to change, then you have to be the one who changes them. People who complain a lot are usually moaning about things over which no one has any control, like the weather, or saying how they hate something like their job, which is something they could change themselves. All that does is it gets everyone down, including themselves.

9. Help someone else get to where they want to be

When you can share your positive and happy nature with other people, you can inspire them to achieve greater things too. Be prepared to lend a helping hand, now and then, because it will help someone else on their way and it will make you feel more fulfilled too.

10. Enjoy the journey

When you start this New Year; set out to enjoy every moment that it has to offer. Remember that every day only comes along once, so you might as well make the most of each and every one. Life is too short to spend it regretting the past, or fretting about the future. Take each day as it comes and live it to the full.

I was paid GHc98 as royalty – Ded Buddy

0

Nobody in this world would want to deploy his skills or talents without any purported plan of gaining some benefits.

One of the reasons, if not the main, for which artistes churn out songs and exude their creativity in many guises is to fill their coffers and chalk financial success.

It is in this vein that systems have been put in place to celebrate and appreciate the efforts and contributions of artistes globally, one of the great ways of appreciating these artistes is by protecting their talents and treating them as their intellectual properties, thus, ensuring that nobody takes for granted their God-given skills for any selfish benefit.

Ghana as a Country has not left out and abandoned her talents like Artistes who flood the airwaves with songs which do not only entertain, but educate, propagate and inspire.  It was in that vein that The Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) was established under section 49 of the Copyright law, Act 690 of 2005 and regulated under L.I 1962 of 210 to collect and distribute royalties accruing to authors and owners of copyright and neighbouring rights.

But the big question is whether or not GHAMRO is executing its duties as expected since many great (both veteran and new artistes) have bemoaned and decried the operations of the organization ,  Prince Bright of former Buk Bak Group recently blamed the woes and failure of the industry on intermittent pay of royalties and the former Chairman of GHAMRO, Kojo Antwi also known as Music Man, also disclosed to DJ Candyman that the reason for his resignation at GHAMRO was inconsistencies between his ideas and the systems of the organization.

Another Veteran Artiste has added his voice, this time, more pathetic.

Eric Turkson, who is known in showbiz circles as  Ded buddy  is one of the veteran artistes in the country who seceded from  the rap group Native Funk Lords (NFL) created in 1990 which had  Eddie Blay , Tiny Quaye and jake as members .                                                                                           He went Solo in the aftermath and made waves with his legendary “Yebesa” song .

He (Ded Buddy) made a shocking revelation on Atinka 104.7 FM when speaking with the Drive talk host, DJ Candyman pertaining to what he receives as royalty for exuding his creative abilities.

When asked how much he received, he shockingly and categorically said he was given ninety-eight (98) cedis as part one (1) payment and was promised part two (2) payment which never came.

“Yes I receive royalties , the last time I received money, they told me that was part payment and promised to release the rest later, they sent me 98 cedis ,’’ he disclosed

It was glaringly obvious that the mention of 98 cedis took the Host (DJ Candyman) by surprise who later wanted to confirm whether he (Ded Buddy) indeed meant the said amount, after which the veteran Artiste confirmed.

“Yes, 98 cedis, listen, it is not as though we are dying to get that money , I mean this is very bad , If you have sent 98 cedis to me, I am wondering what you will give to my  Godfathers who started  before , how will they survive? He rhetorically asked.

When asked by DJ Candyman if he suspected any form of cheating or someone taking what’s theirs’, he said he couldn’t tell but was quick to add that there should be transparency, as to what the organization receives on behalf of artistes and the mode of disbursement, this, he believes will help clear all doubts with regards to the organization’s activities.

It is becoming hackneyed the manner and way people including stakeholders and musicians have inveighed and criticized the Organization (GHAMRO) in recent times ,are these chastisements and allegations something to go by? If yes, it is about time GHAMRO sat up as an organization.

Ded Buddy is currently promoting his Yebesa Remix which featured the sensational Lynx entertainment label signee Kidi .

US government partially shuts down over border wall row

0

A partial US government shutdown has taken effect after US lawmakers failed to break a budget impasse.

Mr Trump, who has to sign off any deal, is insisting at least $5bn (£4bn) in funding be included for his long-promised wall along the Mexican border.

Lawmakers adjourned last-minute talks on Friday evening.

In the absence of an agreement, funding for about a quarter of all US federal agencies lapsed at midnight (05:00 GMT Saturday).

It means the departments of Homeland Security, Transportation, Agriculture, State, and Justice will begin to shut down and federal national parks and forests will also close.

The partial closure, the third of 2018, means hundreds of thousands of federal employees will have to work unpaid or be put on temporary leave.

In a video address published on Mr Trump's Twitter account shortly before the shutdown began, the president insisted the onus was on the Democrats to resolve the closure.

Senior Democrats have accused the president of provoking the situation with a "temper tantrum".

On Wednesday, a stopgap spending bill was passed in order to keep federal agencies open until 8 February – but the agreement did not include funding for Mr Trump's wall.

After a rare backlash from his supporters and hard-line Republicans, Mr Trump dug his heels in over the issue and insisted funds for the wall must be included for him to sign it off.

Under current rules, spending bills are approved in the House of Representatives with a simple majority vote. Mr Trump's party currently dominate that chamber, but the Democrats are set to take control of it in January.

The House has now approved $5.7bn (£4.5bn) of funding for the wall, but before the spending bill reaches the president it also needs to be passed by 60 votes in the Senate – where Republicans only hold 51 seats.

On Friday Mr Trump shared a graphic of his steel-slat wall design for the wall.

Later, he posted a video regarding the immigration row, where he said it was "very dangerous out there".

His address, which was spliced with footage that appeared to show immigrants pushing down border fencing, cautioned about drugs and violent gang members entering the country illegally.

"We don't want 'em in the United States, We don't want 'em in our country," Mr Trump said.

"The only thing that's going to stop that is great border security with a wall, or a slat fence, or whatever you wanna call it."

A strengthened southern border wall was a key election promise for Mr Trump.

During his campaign he insisted he would make Mexico pay for it, but the country has refused.

The Democrats have also remained resolute that US taxpayers should not pay for his plan.

This week Mr Trump's supporters created a GoFundMe for the building process – an appeal that has so far raised more than $13m (£10m) in just four days.

After last-ditch talks failed to reach a resolution on Friday night, members of Congress left Capitol Hill but are expected to return on Saturday.

In his video, Mr Trump said "there is nothing" his Republican party can do about the shutdown and said "we need the Democrats to give us their votes" to resolve it.

"Call it a Democrat shutdown, call it whatever you want but we need their help to get this approved," he said, before urging a bipartisan effort.

Speaking on the floor on Friday, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer laid blame with the president.

"President Trump has thrown a temper tantrum and now has us careening towards a 'Trump shutdown' over Christmas," Mr Schumer said.

Mr Trump has suggested Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell should invoke the so-called "nuclear option" to break the impasse.

The option would mean the bill could be approved in the Senate with a simple majority instead of the 60 currently required – bypassing the need for bipartisan support.

But Mr McConnell has repeatedly refused in the past to invoke such an extreme legislative manoeuvre.

A number of Republican senators on Friday also made clear their staunch opposition to the proposal.

The midnight closure is the third time US federal funding has lapsed so far this year.
