6 invisible sources of sex appeal

The French say, “je ne sais quoi” (literally, "I don’t know what") when describing a certain mysterious something that makes a particular person sexually attractive.

You’d think that with something as vital to the survival of the species as sexual selection, we’d all be very conscious of the cues we (and prospective partners) use for mate selection.

But as the French saying suggests, we are often not consciously aware of these cues. Numerous studies — in which young adults rate the attractiveness of photos of members of the opposite sex, or smell clothes worn by test subjects of the opposite sex — have proven that although we know whom we prefer as prospective mates, we don't always know the exact reasons why we prefer them.

After reviewing a list of subliminal "come hither" stimuli that might shed some light on the mystery of physical attraction, I'll explain how you could take advantage of the new information.

Unconscious Sexual Cues

Based on recent research, here is a list of unconscious attractors, indicating which attributes unconsciously arouse our interest, along with which sensory modalities are thought to be responsible for communicating signals of sexual attractiveness.

1. Body and face symmetry (from smell alone).

We can consciously sense when someone’s face is symmetrical. Women also unconsciously prefer scents (on t-shirts) of men who have symmetrical body and facial features (signs of health and genetic fitness). Exactly what the chemical signals of symmetry are is unclear.

2. Personality (from smell and visual cues).

T-shirt sniff tests also indicate that we have a limited ability to determine which of the “Big 5” personality traits (e.g., extraversion and neuroticism) are dominant in another person from unconscious olfactory cues; again, scientists don’t yet know which chemicals are responsible. Apparently, we can also glean similar information unconsciously just by watching video clips of people’s behavior.

3. Illness (from smell).

Putting aside obvious cues, such as the odor of infected wounds, new evidence suggests we can unconsciously detect olfactory cues associated with bacterial infection in another person. Both humans and animals tend to avoid mates who are ill.

4. Genetic diversity (from smell and taste).

There is evidence that humans can sense, from both sweat and saliva, how close a match another person’s DNA is to their own by detecting major histocompatibility complexes (MHCs). In order to avoid mutations in offspring and stillbirths, mating with someone whose DNA (as evidenced by MHCs) is very different from one’s own is a good idea. Also, combining your genes with someone who has very different immune characteristics increases the odds your children will have robust immune systems. In a previous blog, I speculated that people kiss on the lips because disproportionately large swaths of sensory and motor brain tissue respond to lip, tongue, and mouth stimulation. But some biologists now believe that we kiss on the mouth in order to “taste” the saliva of prospective partners for compatible MHCs.

5. Non-familiarity (from both smell and visual cues).

Research from kibbutz communities in Israel and colonies in Taiwan, where non-relatives are raised in close proximity, shows that humans prefer to mate with those who were not raised with them; mating rates among non-relatives who grew up together is very low. Again, low rates of mate-pairing among adults who grew up together may foster healthy genetic diversity. At least from the point of view of mate selection, familiarity really does breed contempt.

6. Similar personality (from smell).

In a research article, "Birds of a feather do flock together," Wu YouYou and colleagues at Cambridge found that we are drawn to people — both as mates and as friends — who share our personality traits. Whether or not we are conscious of being attracted to people because they have similar personalities is unclear, especially in light of the research just cited on “sniffing out” the Big 5 personality traits.

How to Benefit

So we now know that we judge sexual attractiveness partly based upon cues we aren't conscious of. How can knowing this improve your life?

If you’re in the business of creating or using scents to make perfumes, deodorants, food additives, or soaps more appealing, this research offers fresh ways to stimulate people’s unconscious desires: Perhaps soap that emits “symmetry” and “extraversion” will sell better.

And consider the scenario in which you find yourself repeatedly dating or even marrying “the wrong type." You probably don’t consciously seek out these types of individuals, but somehow you end up with them. Is it possible that a primitive, unconscious part of your brain is drawn to the scent (or another attribute) of "the wrong type"? If so, it wouldn’t be the only case of vestigial attitudes and behaviors we inherited from our distant ancestors that no longer make as much sense as they once did.

Most people’s innate preference for foods high in sugar and fat, for example, was highly adaptive when starvation was a constant threat. But today, with abundant food in most societies (and skyrocketing obesity), attraction to food that is high in fat and sugar is the nutritional equivalent of being attracted to "the wrong type."

Similarly, our temporal myopia — the cognitive bias of valuing “now” much more than “later," which can lead to impulsive, self-destructive behaviors like overeating, overspending, gambling, and drug abuse — was logical 300,000 years ago when the average life expectancy was only 20 years. But today, with lifespans approaching 80, a “grab it now before it slips away” approach to life can create more problems than it solves.

The short life expectancy that prevailed when our brains evolved to their current state — roughly 300,000 years ago — could explain why our brains cling to unconscious sexual attractors. “Until death do us part” probably averaged about five years in prehistoric times. This suggests that long-term emotional compatibility between mates may not have been as crucially important as it is today. In ancient times, more primal imperatives such as genetic diversity and offspring fitness could have far outweighed more subtle, emotional compatibility factors that determine whether or not modern relationships succeed.

Simply being aware that your nose may be getting you into the wrong type of relationships could be a valuable first step to entering relationships that work out better for you.

A second step might be to tune in more closely to olfactory sensations when meeting prospective mates. The fact that we’re usually unaware of such cues doesn’t mean that we can’t consciously experience them if we try hard enough. For example, although you probably think you’re unable to track people from smell alone, like a bloodhound does, researchers at Rutgers University and the University of California, Berkeley demonstrated that humans can indeed track other humans across a lawn just from scent by placing their noses close to the ground.

I’m not suggesting you plant your nose in someone’s armpit (or any other body part) upon first meeting them, but it might make sense to pay closer attention to what your nose is telling you, so you can at least be aware when someone you meet evokes people you’ve already dated who, ultimately, didn’t work out so well.

It may turn out that the presence of the “right” smell — the one that unconsciously turns you on — is a warning sign that you are being physically attracted to the wrong person.

How to find happiness again after a soul crushing breakup

The end of a relationship can sometimes feel like the end of the world. How do you pick yourself up and find happiness again? In this article, Beauty and Tips finds out.

Unfortunately, even those relationships we thought would last forever sometimes end. No matter how high our hopes were, and no matter how much of ourselves we invested in the relationship, things don’t always work out. And when it comes to an end, it can feel as though you’ve lost your limb. You certainly feel like you’ve lost your rock and your future. The good news is that there is hope. People all over the world have suffered heartache and recovered. Moreover, sadness never lasts forever. We all grieve – it’s an important part of the healing process – but it eventually comes to an end. No matter how low you are feeling right now, just remember that this will pass. Let’s take a look at how to find happiness after a break up.

Grieve

Grief is an essential emotion that helps to kickstart the recovery period. It’s when we start to grieve that the healing begins. Are you guilty of not allowing yourself the chance to grieve properly? Perhaps you immediately threw yourself back onto the dating scene, or maybe you insisted to your friends that you’re “Fine,” despite them offering support and counsel. Ignoring your emotions will only make things worse. Somewhere along the line, all that suppressed grief will rise to the surface and hit you at an unexpected time. Accept the support your friends are offering you. Allow yourself the opportunity to cry. Go for long walks and, write things down in a journal. Let your grief pour out of you.

Forgive

If you feel hurt in the wake of a breakup, and feel as though you were wronged and that certain things happened that shouldn’t have happened, it’s important that you now wipe the slate clean by forgiving and forgetting. Forgiveness is an important part of YOUR healing process. A lot of people tend to see forgiveness as being all about the other person and letting them off the hook. But it’s more about us, and freeing ourselves from negative energy and bad memories. Forgive them so that you can start to mend, this is one of the important first aid tips on how to find happiness after a break up.

Take Good Care Of Yourself

When we experience a bad breakup, it’s easy to be so angry with the world that we can no longer see the point in looking after ourselves anymore. Why should we eat healthily? What’s the point? And so we let ourselves go. We play the victim, wallow in self-pity and loathing, and lash out at ourselves and others. This is totally the wrong way to react. Playing the victim is the worst kind of punishment you can mete out to yourself at this stage. Your ex-partner may have “abandoned” you, but you’re now abandoning yourself. Your wellbeing matters so much at this point. You need a sound mind and a sound physical body if you’re to get through this. The worst thing you can do is feed yourself the wrong food, sleep too little, and drink and smoke too much. You might think, “What’s the point!” but there is a point. The point is that you need you. You need yourself to stay strong and look after yourself if you’re to get through this and find happiness again. Be kind to yourself. Be your best friend right now. Do the right things. All these tips are very useful when it comes to how to find happiness after a break up.

Don’t Ask “What If?”

Perhaps the absolute worst thing you can do after a painful breakup is to ask the question, “What if?” What if I’d done this or that? What if I could have forgiven him sooner, instead of holding a stupid grudge? What if I had given him more space? These questions will only torment you. Accept that you did what you did because at the time it seemed like the right call. Learn from your mistakes and move on.

Surround Yourself With Positivity

This is one of the most important tips on how to find happiness after a break up. It’s really important to hang out with positive people at any time, but it’s super important that you find the support of positive people when you’ve experienced a bad breakup. It’s well documented that we soak up the energy that surrounds us. If you hang out with negative people, you will absorb their energy like a sponge. After a breakup, this is the last thing you want. Find the right support system. Find people who are going to lift your spirits, make yourself feel better, and show you that it’s possible to find happiness again. Avoid bitter, resentful and mean people. Paying attention to the slime after a bad storm means you’ll find it hard to look up with a clear head. Always look for the rays of sunshine instead.

Practice Kindness

We’re not always ourselves after a bad breakup, and sometimes we take it out on others. So it’s important that you find ways to be kind and compassionate to others. Practicing simple acts of kindness to others will help you to feel better. It will create lots of positive energy, and will boost your sense of self worth.

Get Physical

In communicational therapy, there is a popular saying: “Motion dictates emotion.” In other words, what you do and what you don’t do can greatly affect your mood. In the event of a breakup, it can make you feel much worse, or it can help you to take the first steps towards recovery. Sitting around doing nothing is not a good idea. You aren’t using any energy, and you’re not not allowing oxygen to pump around your body with haste. This can keep your mood low. Working out, on the other hand, gets your blood pumping and your oxygen flowing, and this can instantly lift your spirits. Also, it’s natural to lose some confidence after a bad breakup. Working out can help to restore the way we feel about ourselves. If you’re not the biggest fan of exercise, you don’t have to work out. You could go singing or dancing instead. Or maybe you could play a sports!

African migrants offered $3,500 to leave Israel or face imprisonment

The Israeli government has issued a notice for thousands of African migrants to leave the country or face imprisonment.

The migrants will be given up to $3,500 (£2,600) for leaving. They will be given the option of going to their home country or to Uganda or Rwanda.

But if they don't leave, the Israeli authorities have threatened that from April they will start jailing them.

People from Eritrea and Sudan make up a significant number of migrants in Israel, Israel's Haaretz newspaper reports.

Most of them say they came to Israel to seek asylum after fleeing persecution and conflict, but the authoroties regard them as economic migrants.

A spokesperson from the Population and Immigration Authority broke down the figures:

There are currently in Israel 38,000 "infiltrators", the term Israel uses to describe people who entered it not through an official border crossing
In the Holot (an open detention facility) there are 970 "infiltrators"

In the Saharonim (a closed detention facility) there are 450 "infiltrators".
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that an unchecked influx of African migrants could threaten Israel's Jewish character.

The order exempts children, elderly people and victims of slavery and human trafficking. The Israeli government says the return is voluntary and will be humane.

But the UN refugee agency and other human rights groups say the controversial plan violates international and Israeli laws.

Hollywood women launch campaign to fight sexual harassment

More than 300 actresses, writers and directors have launched a project to help fight sexual harassment in the film industry and other workplaces.

The initiative, which is called Time's Up, was announced via a full-page advert printed in the New York Times.

The Hollywood project is described as a "unified call for change from women in entertainment for women everywhere".

It comes in the wake of sexual abuse allegations by high-profile actresses against film producer Harvey Weinstein.

Legal funding

The campaign, which is backed by hundreds of actresses including Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon, Cate Blanchett, Eva Longoria and Emma Stone, has already raised more than $13m (£9.6m) of its $15m target.

The money raised will be used to fund legal support for both female and male victims of sexual harassment at work.

The project is aimed primarily at those who are unable to meet the payments to defend themselves, such as agricultural or factory workers, caretakers and waitresses.
In a "solidarity letter" published on its website, Time's Up says the "struggle for women to break in, to rise up the ranks and to simply be heard" must end, adding: "Time's up on this impenetrable monopoly."

The letter, which is aimed at "every woman… who has had to fend off sexual advances", goes on to say that such harassment can often continue because "perpetrators and employers never face any consequences".

It also calls for "gender inequality and the imbalance of power" to be addressed, stressing the need for more women to gain positions of authority and parity of pay.

In December, Time magazine named "the Silence Breakers" – women and men who spoke out against sexual abuse and harassment – as its "Person of the Year" for 2017.
Last year also saw the rise of the #MeToo hashtag, which inspired a global movement of women and men to share their stories of sexual abuse and harassment.

The term gained momentum after actress Alyssa Milano took to Twitter to ask victims of sexual assault to come forward in a show of solidarity.
Between October and December 2017, the hashtag was used on Twitter and Facebook more than six million times.

About 1,400 vehicles have been destroyed as a fire engulfed a multi-storey car park next to the Echo Arena in Liverpool, Sky News reports

Crews rescued two dogs from one of the vehicles inside car park as they battled the blaze, the fire service said. They were thought to be the only animals in the park at the time.

The area has a capacity of 1,600 cars – and 1,400 vehicles were estimated to be parked at the time of the blaze, with all of them destroyed.

Liverpool’s mayor, Joe Anderson, said the blaze started in a Land Rover on the third level of the multi-storey car park – and police believe this caused other vehicles to ignite.

There were periodic explosions and flames shooting up the outside of the building as the cars inside burned.

Merseyside Police have described the fire as accidental, adding: “We believe that all vehicles parked in the car park have been destroyed and advise owners to contact their insurance companies.

No one has been seriously injured, but crews still trying to contain the blaze have been hampered by strong winds.

A reception centre has been set up nearby for people who are unable to get home

The huge blaze next to the Echo Arena, which is on the city’s waterfront, forced organisers to cancel the Liverpool International Horse Show.

Horses which were on the first level of the car park when the fire broke out were moved into the arena.

Nearby buildings – including some apartments – were evacuated because of smoke billowing from the fire.

Crews were first called to the car park at 4.42pm and were on scene eight minutes later.

Kasena/Nankana: Poor patient attitude running War Memorial Hospital blood bank dry

The head of laboratory at the War Memorial Hospital, Ramsey Bugri Anafo, has revealed that poor attitude of patients in replacing blood after recovery accounts for the hospital’s inability to maintain the needed amount of blood at the blood bank of the health facility to meet demand.

According to him, patients in good standing to replace blood at the blood bank mostly fail to do so after recovery. There’s also a challenge of others who receive blood but cannot make replacements for genuine reasons.

Speaking with Atinka News’s Senyalah Castro Cazo at a joint blood donation exercise with the ARISE Youth Group in the Kasena/Nankana East municipal Assembly, Mr Anafo described the attitude as very unfortunate and detrimental to the delivery of good health care services by the hospital’s blood bank as the lab continuously suffers blood shortages even at critical moments.

He also bemoaned the attitude of corporate agencies towards blood donation exercises in the region. He said these corporate agencies have paid little or no attention to a vital part of the hospital from which anyone can receive help at any day and point in time. This, he said on the back of the numerous challenges the hospital and similar groups such as the ARISE Group have had to face in pooling resources for mobile donation exercises.

He called for support from individuals and sector agencies in the municipality to help organize more of such blood donation exercises to enable the hospital’s laboratory meet its monthly issuance of about 400 units of blood to patients.

” we issue a lot of blood at the War Memorial Hospital to our clients. For instance, if you look at our monthly data that we compile, we issue a total number of about 300 to 400 units of blood. So it is very vital that we support exercises like this, individually or as groups or agencies, to help us stock the fridge so that we can give out blood anytime there’s the need, “Mr. Anafo said.

Raphael Kwarase, leader of the ARISE Group explained that the drive to partner with the hospital in the blood donation exercise was propelled by the need to help minimize the impact of frequent blood shortages at the hospital on patients. He noted that there is a huge gap in the number of blood transfusions carried out at the facility and its ability to readily make available the vital liquid.

He further stated that the hospital which is the principal health care provider in the municipality made about 1,200 blood transfusions in the past eleven months, a figure that translates to three patients a day. ” This a huge number that is challenging when you don’t have ready blood stock and we therefore need to work hard to achieve this” he added.

This year’s blood donation exercise had the support of many youth cliques in the municipal assembly. There were lots of refreshments, fun games for donors and musical performances from NeLo Gh and Carl Blingx.

ARISE is an action-driven youth group in Kasena/Nankana East that goes ” beyond the talk” with an objective of identifying and solving societal problems through strategic partnerships and network.

Statement: President Mahama was not late to Revolution Day event

Apambila

Statement: President Mahama was not late to Revolution Day event

The Local Organising Committee of the 36th commemoration of the 31st December Revolution which came off successfully in Ho yesterday would like to settle the unfortunate issue of the arrival time of His Excellency former President John Dramani Mahama.

We wish to state emphatically from the outset that former President Mahama was not late to the Revolution Day event.

According to the statement, it should be noted that what transpired leading to the remarks of the Founder of the NDC and former President, Jerry John Rawlings was an apparent communication lapse. Former President Mahama’s Office was informed to arrive at 10am. It should be noted that Former President Mahama duly complied and in fact arrived earlier at 9:50am.

It must be well acknowledged that Former President Rawlings after having been informed of these facts, in a statesmanly manner, publicly corrected the impression he had created earlier and apologised to President Mahama.

It is the considered view of the LOC that an otherwise successful and well patronized Revolution Day event should not be marred by this blip.

The just observed 36th Revolution Day contrary to claims by our opponents of an imploding NDC has clearly showcased to the nation that the entire rank and file of the NDC is united under the umbrella and deeply committed to the principles of Probity, Accountability and Social Justice.

We take this opportunity to thank all comrades for your participation, support and contributions towards a very successful event.
Happy new year.

Signed,
Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah (MP)
Chairman, Local Organising Committee

It will be recalled that former President Rawlings at the event criticized ex President Mahama for keeping him waiting at functions, adding that official programmes are delayed in wait for Mr Mahama arrival before commencement.

“He has not learnt the lesson of how not to be late for functions. Each time they keep me waiting just because of him. Ladies and gentlemen, don’t worry he will learn it,” he said.
