Apple jams Facebook's web-tracking tools

0

Apple will attempt to frustrate tools used by Facebook to automatically track web users, within the next version of its iOS and Mac operating systems.

"We're shutting that down," declared Apple's software chief Craig Federighi, at the firm's developers conference.

He added that the web browser Safari would ask owners' permission before allowing the social network to monitor their activity.

The move is likely to add to tensions between the two companies.

Apple's chief executive Tim Cook had previously described Facebook's practices as being an "invasion of privacy" – an opinion Facebook's founder Mark Zuckerberg subsequently denounced as being "glib".

At the WWDC conference – where Apple outlines its software plans for the months ahead – Mr Federighi said that Facebook keeps watch over people in ways they might not be aware of.

"We've all seen these – these like buttons, and share buttons and these comment fields.

"Well it turns out these can be used to track you, whether you click on them or not."

He then pointed to an onscreen alert that asked: "Do you want to allow Facebook.com to use cookies and available data while browsing?"

"You can decide to keep your information private."

One cyber-security expert applauded the move.

"Apple is making changes to the core of how the browser works – surprisingly strong changes that should enable greater privacy," said Kevin Beaumont.

"Quite often the changes companies make around privacy are small, incremental, they don't shake the market up much.

"Here Apple is allowing users to see when tracking is enabled on a website – actually being able to visually see that with a prompt is breaking new ground."

He added that the firm appeared willing to flash up a lot of prompts despite the potential for this to become annoying.

"Perhaps Apple is gambling on websites reining in tracking rather than users having to give constant permission to track their device," he added.

Apple also said that MacOS Mojave would combat a technique called "fingerprinting", in which advertisers try to track users who delete their cookies.

The method involves identifying computers by the fonts and plug-ins installed among other configuration details.

To counter this, Apple will present web pages with less details about the computer.

"As a result your Mac will look more like everyone else's Mac, and it will be dramatically more difficult for data companies to uniquely identify your device," Mr Federighi explained.

Ex-Trump campaign aide accused of witness tampering

US prosecutors have accused Donald Trump's former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, of trying to tamper with potential witnesses ahead of his trial.

Robert Mueller, who is investigating alleged Russian election interference, said Mr Manafort had contacted people related to his money laundering and tax fraud case in breach of his bail terms.

Mr Manafort, 69, denies all charges.

They are not connected with allegations of collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign during the US election.

Mr Trump denies any collusion and has consistently spoken of a witch-hunt.

Mr Manafort's first trial, on charges of money laundering and illegal lobbying, is due to begin in September.

According to Mr Mueller's motion, Mr Manafort contacted witnesses who would be called to testify about unlawful lobbying allegedly carried out on behalf of Ukraine's previous pro-Russian government.

Mr Manafort is said to have made tens of millions of dollars from a campaign to bolster that government's reputation within Europe and the US, but failing to register this work.

The communications with witnesses were an "effort to influence their testimony and to otherwise conceal evidence", FBI Special Agent Brock Domin wrote in a separate declaration filed to the court.

Mr Manafort resigned as chairman of the Trump campaign in August 2016. He has been under house arrest since he was charged last October.

Mr Mueller urged the judge to review the conditions of his release from jail.

Mr Manafort's reaction to the new allegations of witness tampering was not immediately known.

His other trial – on tax fraud charges – is due to start next year.

Mr Mueller's investigation, which began last year, has so far issued 22 indictments: 16 to Russian individuals and companies and the rest to Americans.

The former Trump campaign and administration staff indicted also include Michael Flynn, the president's former national security adviser; Rick Gates, a former deputy campaign chair; and George Papadopoulos, a former foreign policy adviser.

The three have worked out plea deals with prosecutors and said they are co-operate with the main investigation.

We’ve Erred, Forgive Us – Anita De Sosoo Begs Rawlings

A National Vice Chairperson of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Anita Desooso was on her knees Monday afternoon pleading with the party’s founder, former President Jerry John Rawlings to forgive the sins of the party.

President Rawlings’ grip of the NDC began chipping away in the aftermath of his presidency in 2000, totally losing control of the party during the Presidency of John Mahama, where junior officials of the government openly rebuked him for criticizing the government.

Worried by the seeming friction between the founder and the party, Desooso said “let’s respect and love those who have sacrificed for us. Let’s respect and sacrifice for those who have helped us”.

“Now to my father – Founder, I know your children we have erred, and I also know that you are a human being and you have also done something; may be it is not right.

“And I was so happy when I heard you say that; when you brought that statement out, rendering an apology – you are a hero. You are a hero. This shows that what you have taught me is still within me. If you are a leader, be prepared to say that I am sorry. If you are a child, be prepared to say that daddy I’m sorry. So, I will take this opportunity on behalf of the party to kneel down before my dad – please forgive us. Let us come together to build this country,” an emotional De-Sosoo pleaded with the former president.

She was speaking at the commemoration of the June 4 uprising on Monday.

Advising party members to be bold enough to speak the truth no matter what, she said; “We should not always think about money like my uncle said. Very soon there will be elections – people will bring money. If you take the money and you vote for them you become their slaves. There are people who have integrity but they don’t have money – they are in to serve. It is time we stop taking money from people before we vote for them.”

10 great health benefits of Noni juice

0

Noni is the common name given to the Morinda citrifolia tree, which grows in South East Asia, the Caribbean and Australasia. It’s an evergreen shrub, and all parts of the tree are used in medicines, including the fruit, leaves, stems and flowers. The fruit itself can be juiced, eaten or used topically and it has some great health benefits. The famous Victoria Secret model Miranda Kerr loves to include noni juice in her healthy diet. Noni juice supplements have received some bad press lately, because some spammers have been claiming that it’s almost the elixir of life, but don’t be put off by that. As with everything, eaten as a part of a balanced diet, noni juice can have same amazing health benefits and here are ten of those:

1. Antidepressant

Health benefits of noni juice are numerous. Noni juice has both antidepressant and mild sedative properties. The fruit helps to stimulate the production of the mood balancing hormone serotonin along with melatonin, which calms you and helps you get a good night’s sleep.

2. Controls hypertension

Another noni juice health benefit is that it can help control hypertension. The juice of the noni fruit contains an amino acid called tryptophan, which helps to promote the production of serotonin which, amongst other things, helps you and your body to relax and so helps to control high blood pressure.

3. Noni juice weight loss

Another one of health benefits of noni juice is that it aids weight loss and promotes muscle growth. Drinking noni juice produces nitric oxide in the body, which is used by the muscles to metabolize energy. The effect of this is that nitric oxide is that it takes energy from food and fat deposits to feed the muscles, thus helping you to lose weight, whilst building up muscle mass at the same time.

 4. Helps to control blood sugar levels

When used in conjunction with insulin treatments, noni juice was found in a research study to assist in controlling the blood sugar levels in diabetics. The fruit contains the compounds triterpenes and saponins, which are known to benefit in this way.

5. Boosts energy levels

Health benefits of noni juice also include improved energy levels. Native Polynesians are known to often eat the fruit of the noni tree to ward off fatigue. The fruit contains a wide range of nutrients and antioxidants that can increase energy levels and improve stamina and physical performance.

6. Anti-aging properties

The antioxidants and other nutrients, including vitamin C, found in noni juice, nourish the cells of the body and fight off the effect of free radicals. Drinking the juice is thought to ward of the signs of aging, maintain the elasticity of the skin and add a beautiful healthy glow to your complexion.

7. Analgesic properties

Studies have shown that the noni fruit has analgesic properties, comparable with off-the-shelf painkillers. It can be effective in reducing pain for sufferers of arthritis and the noni tree is known, in some quarters, as the painkiller tree.

8. Boosts the immunity and has cancer fighting properties

One of the most powerful health benefits of noni juice is that it can tremendously boost your immunity. Noni juice contains antioxidants and a polysaccharide-rich substance, which is thought to be able to boost the immune system and combat the growth of cancerous cells. The nitric oxide, that drinking the juice promotes in the body, also restricts the replication of cancerous cells.

9. Combats hair loss

The vitamins and minerals contained in noni juice help to promote the healthy growth of hair. Drinking the juice strengthens the immune system and promotes healthy blood circulation. Noni juice is often recommended for people who have been through cancer treatments, to help promote the re-growth of their hair.

10. Anti-inflammatory properties

Health benefits of noni juice don’t stop there. Noni juice also has anti-inflammatory properties, which make it useful in treating allergies and skin reactions. Drinking the juice can act as an anti-histamine and so it can be beneficial in reducing the symptoms of hives and allergic skin reactions.

Have you ever tried to drink noni juice? What other health benefits of noni juice did we forget to include in our list?

June 3: AMA promises continuous support for disaster victims

0

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has promised its unflinching support for victims of the 2015 June 3 twin disaster.

More than 150 people perished in the middle of a heavy flooding and rainstorm mid-night Wednesday, June 3 2015, after a fuel tanker exploded at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Branch of the GOIL filling station in Accra.

Survivors of the disaster numbering about 100 have since complained that they have not received the benefits due them after they were discharged from the hospital. At a thanksgiving service the survivors called on the government as well as benevolent bodies to come to their aid.

In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Accra Mayor, Mohammed Adjei Sowah mentioned that the AMA shares in the plight of the victims and that he will continue to support the victims in whatever way that he can.

According to Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the AMA as part of its plans has invested about 1.5 million Ghana Cedis in desilting and dredging gutters to ensure that Accra becomes flood free. “We will plead with the people of Accra to desist from depositing refuse in the gutter. It cannot be a cycle where the AMA will always have to desilt gutters, we will need to help make Accra clean” he said.

‘Shameless’ Persons In NDC Seeking To Erase June 4 History – Rawlings

0

Former President JJ Rawlings has said some “shameless” persons within the NDC with “deeply malicious motives”, for over a decade, spewed falsehood about the party’s history to downplay the story of the June 4 uprising.

“Indeed, many of these personalities have shamelessly disassociated themselves from our history in a bit to create the impression that it is a blot on the image of the party,” he stated.

“It was that suicidal tendency,” according to him, which led to the party’s humiliating defeat in 2016 elections with former President John Mahama as presidential candidate.

The social democratic credentials that gave birth to the NDC, he bemoaned “are lost on many of us,” adding, “our party has almost become a clone of what the other side used to be [referring to the NPP].”

Mr. Rawlings was speaking Monday at the 39th June 4 revolution commemoration at Madina in Accra.

He continued, “elitism and gross display of affluence has almost engrossed us and as I stated in 2017, we are still at the cross roads.”

He warned that those determined to disassociate the NDC from the June 4 uprising will fail, saying “June 4 represents a force that cannot be erased. June 4 is about the semantics of probity, accountability, freedom, justice, truth and integrity. It is about a unified force and power that can move mountains.

“It is a force that defies negativity and revolves on a fulcrum of ordinary peoples’ power. It was the energy that led to the eruption of 1979. That energy was like the force of Gas explosion ignited by the gross disrespect and abuse of people to the point where the bottled-up anger exploded in full force.”

.The revolution sparked when the then military government of the  Supreme military Council (SMC II) of General F K. Akuffo put then flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings on public trial for attempting to overthrow the government on May 15th 1979. This happened because Rawlings was a junior soldier in the Ghanaian Army who with other soldiers were refused to be given their salaries.

Rawlings turned the trial against the government by accusing it of massive corruption and requesting that his fellow accused be set free as he was solely responsible for the mutiny. He was incarcerated. His diatribe resonated with the entire nation as there was massive suffering.

In the night of June 3rd 1979, junior military officers including Major Boakye Djan broke into the jail where Rawlings was being held and freed him, and ostensibly marched him to the national radio station to make an announcement. The first time the public heard from Rawlings was a now legendary statement that he Rawlings had been released by the junior officers and that he was under their command. He requested all soldiers to meet with them at the Nicholson Stadium in Burma Camp in Accra.

The entire nation went up in uproar. The soldiers rounded up senior military officers including three former heads of states, General F. K Akuffo, Ignatious Kutu Acheampong and Afrifa for trial. They were subsequently executed by firing squad.
