healthy fat sources for vegetarians

0

Where do vegetarians get their healthy fats from? Let’s take a look at 10 healthy fat sources for vegetarians and vegans.

Avocados

Ah, there doesn’t seem to be a day that goes by at the moment without avocados popping up on a list of healthy foods. And as far as healthy fats go, avocado is pretty much the Queen of healthy fat sources. A lot has been said about the fact that avocados contain a lot of fat, and indeed it might be one of the reasons why some dieters avoid them. However, while this is true, the fact is that out of its 23g of fat, a typical medium avocado contains mostly good fats. And because avocados are also rich in fibre, they’re one of the best foods you can eat if you’re trying to lose weight. Best things to do with avocado? Make guacamole with one, add them to your salads or sandwiches, or scramble them with your eggs. They’re incredibly versatile!

Dark Chocolate

You’re not imagining things! Dark chocolate is an excellent source of good fats. Go on, we’ll let you eat it!

Seeds

People always find it funny when we tell them that seeds are bursting with fat and it’s probably because most of us associate sources of fat with generally fatty foods like bacon and pizza. However, seeds are one of the healthiest sources of fat on the planet, which makes them perfect for vegetarians. The great thing about seeds too is that they’re so versatile. They can be added to your sandwiches, bowl of cereal, salads, smoothies and much more! So where does the fat come from? Seeds contain omega-3 fatty acids which, as you might know, is one of the healthiest fats there is. The best sources are sunflower seeds, chia seeds and hemp seeds, but in all honesty it doesn’t matter which seeds you go for, as they’re all totally amazing babes.

Olive Oil

Never sure what type of oil to cook with? Olive oil is not only full of heart-friendly fats, it also tastes pretty darn good, too!

Salmon

Like avocados, not a day seems to go by when salmon isn’t included in a list of foods that are good for you and also it happens to be one of the most amazing healthy fat sources. Not only is salmon incredibly healthy, it’s also delicious and versatile. It makes the perfect companion with eggs in the morning, fits in well with potatoes at dinner, or tastes good when combined with cream cheese on a bagel at lunch.

The American Heart Association reckons we should eat salmon at least twice a week, so if you’re a vegetarian who doesn’t mind the odd fish dish here and there, salmon is well worth adding to your diet.

Coconut Oil

It’s the eternal question asked by people who want to get healthier: What oil should I cook with? Big question! For years, many of us have used olive oil or virgin olive oil but these days so much research has been carried out into the likes of grapeseed oil and avocado oil that the choices are endless and bewildering. However, our top pick where healthy fats are concerned is coconut oil. Not only does coconut oil taste amazing, but it’s also one of great healthy fat sources that support your liver.

Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise? Really?! We’re imagining all kinds of looks right now!

True, for a long time mayonnaise was chastised as being the bad boy of the condiment world. If you were caught coating a load of it over your chips, people around you would grimace. And it was even worse when you asked for a tuna mayo sandwich! However, mayonnaise has a reputation that’s largely undeserved, and the reality is that it’s actually a good source of unsaturated fat. However, you should check the label before purchasing to make sure that you’re not buying mayo that is ridiculously high in the bad stuff.

Ugandan woman 'fakes own kidnap'

A Ugandan woman has found herself in hot water after allegedly faking her own kidnapping, local newspaper The Daily Monitor reports.

According to the outlet, Christine Nabasumba's family received calls saying she had been kidnapped on her way home from work on Friday.

The kidnappers, it was claimed, wanted 10m Ugandan shillings ($2,675; £2,000) in exchange for her safe return.

However, on Monday morning police in the capital Kampala had some surprising news for her desperate father – who had enlisted officers' help in finding the 25-year-old.

Police spokesman Luke Oweyesigire said she had been found in a guest house just 16km (nine miles) from her home in Busega, Kampala.

He added she was now facing charges for "giving false information to the public".

Ghana’s James Addison headlines Africa Emotional Intelligence Conference in Nigeria

0

Ghana’s first certified Emotional Intelligence coach, James Addison, is the lead speaker at the Africa Emotional Intelligence Conference to be held in Nigeria from 30th to 3st May, 2018

After successfully introducing Ghanaians to the benefits of emotional resilience as far as the youth is concerned, James Kwesi Addison has been requested to help the Conference to understand both the rationale and operation for “Building Emotional Resilience in Students”.

Africa is focusing more and more on its estimated 760 million young people under 30 years, recognizing the need for skills in being emotionally resilient as future leaders, workers and parents.

SESA Ghana is James’ model to present in Nigeria, representing innovation on how to build the skills for emotional resilience in students – but more importantly how to also sustain this powerful and traditional Ghanaian capability.

Speaking to journalists Mr. Addison said “I am honoured for them to invite and host me and to have the stage to explain how Building Emotional Resilience in Students is a vital element of the future in any country”.

He explained that “Emotional Resilience is an inner capability to navigate our lives and circumstances whilst deploying skills in Emotional Intelligence – a construct of 10 social emotional skills which enables us to harness our emotions into positive thinking and behaviour; rather than destructive and unhealthy thinking and behaviour”

“We just build emotional intelligence from an early age, tune-into ourselves and know ourselves as emotional beings. Recognise our thinking and behaviour and learn to move quickly from the emotional area of our brain (Fight, Flight, Freeze responses) and into the logical part of the brain where we seek solutions from our inner competencies and problem solving,” he added.

Explaining how he came across Emotional Intelligence in the first place, Mr. Addison said: “As a native Ghanaian, in 2014 I saw the clear need for communities to use emotional intelligence (awareness of self, emotional responses and how to harness this into positive creativity, relationships and lifestyle) to address many of the modern day societal issues which are emotion centred – such as: violence, divorce, trauma and crime. I researched and trained myself in the science and practice of emotional intelligence as a coach; qualifying in both the practice and assessment of emotional intelligence.

“My international research into the practice of emotional intelligence in business and leadership, led me to recognise that this capability was a fundamentally forgotten Ghanaian one, but the growing scientific research actually now presents the evidence of the real benefit from building emotional intelligence”

According to him, Emotional intelligence is part of us all, the only difference is the conscious development of it – practice and perfection.  “Having grown at the knee of Nana Antwi II, the Late Paramount Chief and the President of Enyan Denkyira Traditional Area and a founding member of Ghana’s ‘National House Chiefs’ I listened to the stories of how the old leaders practice listening, calmness and taught their communities these skills in regulating emotions, channeling emotional energy and how together they overcame the distress of adversity and set-back. I knew I needed to reinstate this capability.”

According to him, there is a psychological structure to Emotional Intelligence which enables anyone, any age, to build 10 social emotional skills – which are interdependent and make a powerful difference to our mental wellbeing, social interactions, happiness and resilience.

“I found a gentleman called Jay Baughan, in Europe, who had spent years perfecting a community learning process in Africa, the Middle East and Europe – dedicated to building emotional resilience – called SESA. I tracked him down and convinced him to let me take it to Ghana. We partnered, and I now have access to SESA which is now the world’s first learning, development and research infrastructure which can be embedded deep into communities to build the Emotional Intelligence capability, resulting in emotional resilience.” Addison explained.

“Going to Nigeria, which is where Jay created SESA to support Niger Delta youth reintegration, I am able to now lift the lid on what emotional resilience is and what we need to consider for helping ensure communities and self-sustain it for the long-term,” he said.

Western Region chiefs hail Akufo-Addo for developments

0

The policies and programmes being implemented by the Nana Akufo-Addo government are having, and will continue to have, a major impact on the lives of ordinary Ghanaians, some traditional rulers in the Western region have stated.

Innovative programmes such as Free Senior High School education, Planting for Food and Jobs as well as the remarkable macroeconomic stability and growth arising from prudent economic management are ample testimony that the Government is on course to deliver on the pledge to better the lives of Ghanaians, and is worth commending, according to Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, Paramount chief for the Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area, and Nana Nteboah Prah IV, Chief of Heman-Prestea.

Speaking at separate mini durbars to welcome the Vice President of the Republic, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on Sunday 27th May, 2018, the chiefs expressed confidence that other programmes being implemented, such as the Nation Builders Corps and the digitisation of the major planks of the economy, would help set Ghana on a path of accelerated development.

Citing the latest IMF Report on Ghana’s economic performance, issued on 2nd May 2018, IMF Update Country Report Number 18/113, which indicated that the country had met and surpassed its Fiscal Deficit Target for the first time since 2006, Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim commended the Akufo-Addo government for achieving such a historic feat in the macroeconomic sector, and called for its sustenance.

Alluding to the Digitisation agenda being spearheaded by Vice President Bawumia, Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim called for the expansion of the digital revolution, saying “Now when you hear digital in Ghana, it is associated with your name. When you hear seamless, it is associated with your name, H.E. Bawumia. Please extend it to the whole of Ghana so we all benefit.”

On his part, Nana Nteboah Prah IV, Chief of Heman-Prestea, described the setting up of a Zongo Development Fund and the appointment of a Minister for Zongo and Inner City Development as “timely and a reflection of the new governance style introduced by the Akufo-Addo government.”

“This is a new thing introduced by this government, that the Presidency would tour Zongos, fraternise with them and know their challenges. They have even appointed a Minister for Zongos. Some of us were born in the Zongo so we know how life is in the Zongos. We commend Government for the commitment to the development of Zongos. We also have a Zongo in Prestea, and we are confident that the impact of the activities of the Zongo Development Fund would also be felt in Prestea Zongo.”

Nana Nteboah Prah urged his subjects to take advantage of the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) programme, designed to tackle graduate unemployment and would offer employment to at least 350 graduates in every constituency in seven different modules, saying an opportunity to earn a living should not be sniffed at.

“It is a very good programme. If you are an unemployed graduate, staying home all this while, and there is an opportunity to earn a living and start something for yourself, then I will urge you to take it up. It will help you and all of us, and reduce the burden on yourself and your family.”

In brief remarks, Vice President Bawumia assured the chiefs and people of the Western region that the Nana Akufo-Addo government has begun fulfilling its promises to Ghanaians and is determined to make life better for the ordinary Ghanaian.

The Vice President was in the Western Region on the latest leg of a nationwide Ramadan Tour to pray with his Moslem brethren and seek Allah’s blessing for the nation. He also offered special prayers for the sustenance and enhancement of the peace Ghana continues to enjoy in spite of the multiplicity of religious faiths in the country.

NABCO receives huge endorsement from chief of Heman-Prestea

The Chief of Heman-Prestea in the Western Region, Nana Nteboah Prah IV, has lauded the Nana Akufo-Addo government for introducing a programme designed specifically to deal with graduate unemployment.

The Nation Builders Corps (NABCO), which is set to offer employment to 100,000 graduates this year programme and would engage at least 350 graduates in every constituency in seven different modules, is one of a number of measures designed to tackle the unemployment situation in the country, and this, according to Nana Nteboah Prah, deserves high praise.

Speaking at a mini durbar to welcome the Vice President of the Republic, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Sunday 27th May, 2018, Nana Nteboah Prah urged his subjects to take advantage of NABCO, saying an opportunity to earn a living should not be sniffed at.

Outlining a number of policies and programmes initiated in the 16 months of the new government, Nana Nteboah Prah singled out the setting up of a Zongo Development Fund and the appointment, for the first time in Ghana’s history, of a Minister for Zongo and Inner City Development as a “reflection of the new governance style introduced by the Akufo-Addo government.”

“This is a new thing introduced by this government, that the Presidency would tour Zongos, fraternise with them and know their challenges. They have even appointed a Minister for Zongos.
