Gay lobbyists becoming too powerful in Ghana – Afenyo Markins

0

Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central Region, Alexander Afenyo Markins says people risk losing their jobs if they attempt to lead anti-gay crusade in Ghana.

According to the lawmaker, pro-gay activists are quietly maneuvering and advocating because they are powerful and that the society is not dealing with the issue.

Speaking to Accra based Okay FM Thursday, Alexander Afenyo Markins stated that the society is pretending to be dealing with the issue of gay whereas those who are supposed to be dealing with the issue are themselves not ready.

He said religious bodies and opinion leaders do not have the time to talk about anti-gay with the exception of the Speaker of Parliament who recently made his stance known to the general public.

“Religion frowns on Alcoholism, fornication and other social vices and constantly preaches against the consumption of alcohol as well as the practice of fornication. Why don’t we do the same when the issue of gay is raised? If the society is anti-gay, the society must manifest it”.

“Let those who don't believe in the criminalization of gay begin the debate and let’s see if they can survive a week in their respective jobs. Let us not pretend that there is no Gay, I tell you there is a new era of the youth who are actively involved in same-sex relationships, let us not pretend.”, he said.

According to him, those who are in favor of Gay have become more powerful and influential over the years and are able to control those who are anti-Gay.

Mac Manu accused of giving GPHA contracts to wife and children

Four worker unions of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) have given President Akufo-Addo a two-week ultimatum to sack their Board Chairman, Peter Mac Manu, for breaching several corporate governance practices.

According to the workers, the NPP election strategist is milking the authority of millions of cedis through bad corporate governance practices.

They have, therefore, given the government a two-week ultimatum to sack him or face their wrath.

The workers made the allegations at a press conference in Takoradi Thursday.

According to the four unions which comprises Tema Senior Staff Union, Tema Junior Staff Union, Takoradi Senior Staff Union and Takoradi Junior Staff Union, Mac Manu  is  deeply involved in nepotism and conflict of interest at the GPHA.

They alleged that the Authority could collapse if the Board Chairman is not reprimanded.
The workers also accused the board chairman of facilitating a contract on an LNG Project, requesting management to let the company pay two hundred thousand dollars ($200, 000) for twenty-five years.

The unions also mentioned Meridian Port Services (MPS) and review of the concession agreement between GPHA and MPS and the role the Dr. Mahamudu Bawamia, the Vice President is playing to sanitize activities and yet the process is being muddied by the board chairman.

They also accused Mr. Manu of “obtaining for himself a contract of over GHS4m for wiring of the newly constructed Electrical/Material Block of the GPHA.”

“Three of his [Mac Manu] children are now the biggest suppliers to the Authority,” the workers further alleged.

“The board Chairman’s wife has taken over ticketing for staff’ travels, and the Authority is being priced at cut-throat prices,” the workers said.

The spokesperson of the four unions, John Aseeph, urged the government to act swiftly on the matter to save the company.

Ugandan sues church over wedding preconditions

0

A Ugandan man is suing one of the country's largest churches over its marriage pre-conditions.

Michael Aboneka filed the case against the Watoto Church at constitutional court, saying the demands he had to meet before walking down the aisle with his bride violated his rights.

He said the church asked him to present a letter of consent from her parents, a pastor’s endorsement of fitness for marriage, evidence of his HIV status – tested at one of the specified hospitals – and a counselling report, issued by the hospital.

It has all proved too much for Mr Aboneka.

‘’I can’t get married under those conditions," he said. "My conscience won’t allow me to do that.

"I have a duty to bring to the attention of the court any irregularities and any unconstitutional practices, and that is why I am before the constitutional court."

In his affidavit, Mr Aboneka cites a number of sections of the constitution which he says are violated by the pre-conditions set by the church before a couple can tie the knot – including the right to privacy and the right for the woman to decide who to marry.

He now wants the court to issue an injunction which would stop the church from continuing with the practice until the matter is decided.

The case has elicited a huge reaction in Uganda. The church has now less than two weeks to respond to the case filed at the constitutional court. Thereafter, the court is expected to set a date for hearing.

South Africa's President to donate half his $290,000 salary to charity

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced he will donate half his $290,000 salary to charity in honour of the country's first black leader, Nelson Mandela.

Mr Ramaphosa – who took over from Jacob Zuma in December, and is facing a national election in 2019 – announced the move in parliament on Wednesday.

The donations, he said, would form part of a new fund called Thuma mina (Send me), and would be managed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The billionaire also hopes others will follow in his footsteps – even if it was not with money.

"In memory of Madiba, in recognition of the great sacrifices he made and his tireless commitment to improving the lives of the most vulnerable, there is something that many of us can do," he explained, according to South Africa's News24.

"We are looking for people with skills, time and commitment to 'lend a hand' to these community-based projects through mentoring, training and capacity building.

"In this way, we aim to provide South Africans with a tangible opportunity, with a significant impact, to be an integral part of the fight against poverty."

The fund will be launched on what would have been President Mandela's 100th birthday later this year.

Nyantakyi charged with fraud, heads back to CID for further grilling

The Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has formally charged embattled President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi , with defrauding by false pretence.

This followed allegations that he used the names of President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to extort money from some investors.

Kwesi Nyantakyi was picked up Wednesday from the Kotoka International Airport by plain-clothed officers on arrival from Morocco and driven straight to the CID Headquarters where he was interrogated for about five hours.

A search was conducted at his home before he was granted bail later. He is to report back to the CID Thursday for further questioning.

President Akufo-Addo reported the head of the country’s football governing body to the police after watching a video documentary by investigative journalist, Anas Aremaeyaw Anas, in which Mr Nyantakyi is allegedly captured engaging in some influence peddling using the names of the president and his Vice.

Mr. Nyantakyi is said to have attempted to use the name of the president and vice president to induce potential investors to part with various sums of money.

He was interrogated in the presence of his lawyer Thaddeus Sory.

The disclosure will prove embarrassing to the man easily recognised as the most successful football head under whose stewardship Ghana first qualified to the FIFA World Cup in Germany 2006 and followed that with two more successive appearances in South Africa (2010) and Brazil in 2014.
