Dep Special Prosecutor nominee proposes 'plea bargaining' to speed up cases

The Deputy Special Prosecutor nominee, Cynthia Lamptey, has proposed an adjournment cap in court to curb unnecessary delays in the legal system.

She told the Appointments Committee during her vetting Wednesday that urgent steps should be taken to speed up justice delivery in the country.

According to her, adjournments are used in delaying case and that “there must be regulation where a number of adjournments are specified,”

Madam Lamptey , who has practised for close to three decades, said  plea bargaining could be employed  in criminal cases.

She said Plea bargaining “will shorten the period in handling cases and save clients in saving more money.”

Albino girl, five, abducted and killed in Mali

Angry villagers have set fire to police headquarters after a five-year-old girl with albinism was abducted and killed by armed men in Mali.

Djeneba Diarra, who lived in a village in Fana, 125km (78 miles) north of the capital Bamako, was taken from the courtyard where she was sleeping with her mother and sister in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The little girl's headless body was later found beside the mosque.

"We demand justice. Her head was taken. This is a ritual crime," activist Mamadou Sissoko told news agency AFP after going to the scene.

Witnesses said angry villagers then partially burned down the paramilitary police headquarters. Shops remained closed for most of Monday as protests continued, according to Studio Tamani [in French].

There are concerns the killing may be linked to Mali's presidential election, which is taking place at the end of July.

There is a belief among some groups in parts of Africa that potions made from the body parts of people with albinism can bring good luck and wealth.

Mr Sissoko said: "Every time there are elections, we become prey for people who want to make ritual sacrifices. This is not the first time this has happened in Fana.

"The state needs to take up its responsibilities."

Ernest Opoku lashing: Nayas charged with unlawful entry, granted bail

The police have charged Kumawood actress Nayas with unlawful entry after she illegally entered Adom FM premises to attack gospel musician Ernest Opoku.

Nayas, born Gladys Mensah Boaku, was formally charged on Tuesday and granted bail after The Multimedia Group filed a case with the Nima Police on Monday.

A furious Nayas on Monday stormed Adom FM with a cane hidden in her dress and attacked Ernest Opoku over claims that the musician had had sex with her.

The musician had just finished a Live Worship programme on the station when the attack occurred.

The police are also likely to charge the actress with assault after Ernest Opoku also made a complaint with the Nima Police Monday night.

When the actress arrived at the Nima Police, in the company of her mother on Tuesday, the gospel musician could not be reached and, therefore, Nayas couldn’t be charged with assault.

A police investigator was at Adom FM around 7:00 pm Monday to examine the scene of the alleged attack and also gather evidence.
Ernest Opoku and Nayas

What might have triggered the alleged attack?

Ernest Opoku had admitted in a previous interview of making a mistake by having an affair with the actress which resulted in a pregnancy.

The musician is reported to have pleaded with pastors and the general public to pray for him so he will not yield to temptations. He, in fact, blamed the devil, for the affair.

“Mistakes are committed by human beings. I am not an angel. The Bible says the righteous shall fall seven times but God shall lift him up. Pray for me so that God continues to lift me up. The fact that I have made a mistake does not mean the Lord has forsaken me,” he added.

Nayas who was clearly not amused by the gospel musician’s comments stormed the station's premises on Monday to exact revenge.

An unyielding Nayas

Several people who had gathered at the station tried in vain to calm down an angry Nayas who said she would only forgive the musician if he retracts the comments and goes down on his knees to ask for forgiveness.
The furious camped at the forecourt of The Multimedia Group building waited impatiently for the musician, who remained in the studios of Adom FM to avoid further embarrassment.

It was only ace broadcaster and actor Amankwah Ampofo who managed to convince her to abandon her mission and leave.

Ernest Opuku also quietly left the premises of the station without further incident.

It is not clear yet whether the sex claim by the gospel musician is true.

Bagbin cautions Ghanaians against ethnicity and Religion

0

Mr Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, Second Deputy Speaker and Member of Parliament for Nadowli/Kaleo has cautioned against politicising issues on grounds of ethnicity and Religion.
“Ghana is a unitary state and we cannot afford to sacrifice our lovely country on the altar of ethnicity and religion, which will end up dividing us as a people.

Mr Bagbin who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency on his political career and recent ethnic comments said Ghana was moving on and therefore reducing her to ethnicity and religious lines could undermine the gains she made over the years.

The Member of Parliament also cautioned the media against wrong reportage that could create problems especially on issues of ethnicity and religion.

The MP for Nadowli/Kaleo and Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament particularly cautioned the media against the alleged friction between the Ashantis and Akyems adding that; “these are not issues we want to be hearing as they are not so healthy.”

He faulted the media for what he said was an unfortunate attempt to whip up an Akyem and Ashanti fault line from the issue saying ‘it is not fair andreminded those who tried to stir up the matter that irrespective of who a person was in a given context, the person was first and foremost a Ghanaian.

“Ghana, is the supreme owner of all its citizens and from the perspective of Mother Ghana, all its citizens are Ghanaians, “not Akyems, Ashantis among others.”

“We live in a country in which everybody is a relative to somebody because even inter-tribal marriages alone have ensured that we do not truly have tribal identities, it is therefore sad that some people would try to whip up tribal hatred between Ashantis and Akyems.” Mr Bagbin said.

The Legislator reminded that Ghana was a shining example to the world because even though the country arguably had a high number of different ethnic groups living together, she had never experienced a civil war.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu ll had expressed his displeasure about how some high ups of the ruling party were trying to pitch him against the Akyems when some executives of the ruling party paid a courtesy call on him.

Following from that, the Ghanaian media went to town, reporting the issue in a way that heightened tensions between the Ashantis and the Akyems.

In swift response, President Akufo-Addo met Otumfuo in Kumasi to smoothen issues with the Asantehene.

Mr Bagbin lauded President Akufo-Addo for the move, saying “it was timely and well thought out” and also thanked Otumfuo for hosting the dialogue and smoking the fatherly advice to government.

He admonished the media to be circumspect about reporting on supposed tribal differences in future saying it did not serve the interest of Ghana well to stoke such sentiments if even they exist.

“In Ghana, everybody counts and this is well registered in our history. In our fight against colonialism for instance, Fantes, Ashantis, Akyems, Gas, Ewes, Dagombas, and people from various tribes were involved. They all shirked off their tribal identities and went under the banner of Ghana.

“We owe it to ourselves to keep it that way, because this oneness has served us very well.”

‘Wontumi is miles ahead of me when it comes to ignorance’ –Bantama MP

Member of Parliament for Bantama in the Ashanti Region, Daniel Okyem Aboagye, has fired Ashanti Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, describing him as “illiterate and ignorant”.

The MP’s damning description of his regional chairman follows an ongoing tussle between the two gentlemen over a property, which is currently before the law courts.

Speaking on Atinka’s FM AM Drive with host Kaakyire Ofori Ayim Tuesday, the angry MP said: “I hold two MBAs in Chartered Accountancy from the United States of America and Wontumi is a school dropout from Prempeh College. He is miles ahead of me when it comes to ignorance.”

Chairman Wontumi allegedly defied a court order to vacate the residential property.

Mr. Antwi Boasiako allegedly restrained court officials and police from entering the premises to enforce the court order to take over the house at Atasomanso in Kumasi.

“I understand simple common law and my lawyer has briefed me on the dispute to understand and he [chairman Wontumi] doesn’t understand the law and you should tell him to provide the original document to the law court if he has the accurate document,” the Bantama MP fumed.

He said he will sue Chairman Wontumi for contempt for restraining court officials and police from entering the premises.

The residential property has been in dispute between the defunct Noble Dream Microfinance, its former Chief Executive, Ezekiel Owusu Afriyie, Endurance Oti Boateng and other directors on one hand and Mr. Okyem Aboagye who had acquired it by auction, on the orders of a Kumasi High Court.

However, Mr. Antwi Boasiako told Atinka Fm that he has original documents from Ezekiel Owusu Afriyie who has been restrained by a Kumasi High Court to claim the property.

Woman killed in shooting at Alavanyo

0

An unknown assailant has shot and killed a woman and injured another in an attack in the Alavanyo town of Deme in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region.

The deceased, Atta Yaw Rejoice, a woman in her early 40s, was returning from the farm when she was shot at the entrance to her house, according to eyewitnesses.

The incident occurred on Monday evening in the troubled area.

The other victim, an 80-year-old woman, was also hit by the bullets but survived and was rushed to St Margaret Marquette Catholic Hospital at Kpando for treatment.

The assailant reportedly fled into a nearby bush.

The Assemblyman for the Area, Raymond Chorkor, who earlier confirmed news of the attack to Citi News, said the police and the military were at the scene investigating.

The Monday attack followed the recently alleged abduction of an Elder from the Alavanyo dynasty, who had gone missing during their festival.

Alavanyo has been home to similar acts of violence typically attributed to the protracted land dispute between it and the nearby Nkonya traditional area.

However, security personnel have advised that such incidents be decoupled from the land dispute.

They argue that the crimes must be treated in isolation, investigated and the perpetrators dealt with.
