Thank you for your sacrifices –Bawumia to Police

0

The Vice President of the Republic, H.E. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has, on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the people of Ghana, expressed the nation’s gratitude to the officers and men of the Ghana Police Service for their continuous efforts to maintain law and order.

Dr Bawumia has also expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the line of duty, and pledged government’s commitment to resource the Service to enable it discharge its duties in a professional manner.

“Permit me to express the gratitude of the people of Ghana to you for your dedication to duty and resilience in the execution of your mandate” Vice President Bawumia stated at the 2017 West African Security Services Activities (WASSA) of the Ghana Police Service in Accra on Friday 20th April, 2018.

The WASSA is an annual get-together of members of the security agencies in an informal setting to review the year’s activities and exchange frank ideas on the way forward.

The programme, was attended by the heads of the other security agencies as well as the Minister of the Interior, Hon Ambrose Dery.

“Our gratitude and sympathies go to the families of the gallant men and women lost in the course of duty through unwarranted attacks by some criminals. Let me say that you made your fallen officers proud with the speed and dispatch by which you pursued the perpetrators of such heinous crimes that resulted in their arrest. We say thank you for your resolute and professionalism by which you undertake such selfless and noble tasks.”

Vice President Bawumia commended the officers and men of the Service for delivering on their mandate despite the challenges, and promised government’s continued support.

“I wish to commend you once again for the sacrifices you have been making with very scarce logistics, and under trying conditions. I am also aware of the efforts you are making day and night to keep our communities safe for the socio-economic development of our nation.

“It is noteworthy and indeed admirable that the Police Administration persisted in its efforts and administered the limited resources to achieve those monumental feats in the past year.  It is this attitude of commitment and dedication to duty that has culminated into the successes recorded in 2017.”

Dr Bawumia continued, “Having made all these demands on the Police, it is just proper that the government provides the resources you need to discharge your responsibilities.  It is in the light of this that over 120 pickups were given to you to enhance your operations. I wish to assure you that Government has advanced in its efforts to procure the requisite logistics, equipment and other resources for you as promised. Government is of firm conviction that, once these resources are made available your efficiency and overall performance will rate higher.”

No need to memorise numbers, just dial 191 to access Police –Bawumia

The era of memorising and dialling different contact numbers for specific police stations and offices has become a thing of the past, as the Ghana Police can now be reached on the special emergency number 191 to address enquiries anytime and anywhere.

The emergency number 191, is linked to the digital address system to make it easy to locate a place and also reduce the stress of memorising numbers of the call centres of the police.

The Vice President of the Republic, H. E Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced this at the 2017 West African Security Services Activities (WASSA) of the Ghana Police Service 2017 held at the Integrity Square, Ghana Police Headquarters, Accra on Friday, 20th April, 2018.

“You can dial 191, the number one nine one, from any part of Ghana and you will get a police call centre and they will respond to your needs. We don't have to try to remember many numbers of different police stations. If you want the police just dial 191 and you will get responses” Vice President Bawumia announced.

Dr. Bawumia admonished the police to also explore using technology to help policing in Ghana.

"Let us explore how we can use technology to help in our policing” he said.

The Vice President urged the police to make good use of the formalisation of the economy to help reduce crimes.

"The introduction of the national identification system together with the digital address system should help in the crime -stoppers efforts” Dr. Bawumia added.

The emergency call system will also provide detailed information on callers to aid the police in their work.

Present at the event were the Interior Minister, Hon. Ambrose Dery, the Inspector General of Police, the Chief of Defence Staff, members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) and the heads of the other security agencies.

Ghana Beyond Aid is fight for Economic Emancipation – Bawumia

0

After a successful fight for political freedom, Ghana is once again leading the rest of Africa in a fight for emancipation, this time for economic freedom, the Vice President of the Republic has declared.

According to H.E. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, this vision of an economically-emancipated Africa is what underpins President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s vision of a Ghana Beyond Aid, which should eventually lead to an Africa Beyond Aid.

Dr Bawumia outlined the President’s vision when he received H.E. Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires, former President of the Republic of Cape Verde, at the Jubilee House, Accra on Friday 20th April, 2018.

H.E. Pedro Pires is in Ghana to deliver the 6th Edition of the Africa Leadership Lectures of the University of Development Studies, Tamale.

“Decades after Ghana and the rest of Africa fought for political freedom, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is engaged in a fight for economic freedom, which is captured in his vision of a Ghana beyond Aid. We hope this eventually leads to an economically-emancipated Africa, an Africa Beyond Aid,” H.E Dr Bawumia stated.

The Vice President commended the former Cape Verde President, who was awarded the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Leadership after his terms ended in 2011, saying “President Pires is a role model for those privileged to serve.”

Recalling his days in Ghana, when he arrived in 1962 as a Freedom Fighter, H.E. Pedro Pires had high praise for President Akufo-Addo’s stance on matters affecting the African continent, as well as Ghana’s economic and political stability now.

“Ghana is a shining example for the rest of Africa, and I sincerely hope it is sustained and enhanced.”

The woman, who has not been named, said her "religious beliefs" prevented her from shaking the hand of the male official in the citizenship ceremony.

A government ruling said it showed she was "not assimilated into the French community" and denied her citizenship.

She appealed, but France's highest administrative court upheld the ruling.

The Algerian woman has been married to a French man since 2010.

He told Arsenal's website: "This is one of the most difficult days we have ever had in all our years in sport. One of the main reasons we got involved with Arsenal was because of what Arsène has brought to the club on and off the pitch. His longevity and consistency over such a sustained period at the highest level of the game will never be matched.

"Arsène has unparalleled class and we will always be grateful to him. Everyone who loves Arsenal and everyone who loves football owes him a debt of gratitude.

"We must now focus on making a strong finish to the season and ask our millions of fans around the world to join us in paying appropriate tribute to one of the greats of Arsenal's history and one of the greats of the game."

Sunday's 2-1 defeat defeat to Newcastle was their 11th in the league this season, equalling their worst tally in a campaign under Wenger.

Arsenal finished outside the league's top four last season for the first time since Wenger arrived at the club in 1996, and are now 14 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, with five matches remaining.

Supreme Court dismisses Ayine application over Amidu case

0

An application by former deputy Attorney- General to improve his arguments against the presidential decision to select Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor has been dismissed.

The Supreme Court judge, Justice Gabriel Pwamang, sitting alone on the case threw out the application describing it as lacking merit.

This was after the state represented by Deputy Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame argued that court rules bars the opposition politician from doing so.

It is Dr. Ayine's case that Martin Amidu, 66 years, is unfit for the anti-corruption office because he is beyond the statutory age for holding a public office.

At the hearing of the two-month-old case, the Bolgatanga East MP Dr. Dominic Ayine had wanted to file additional arguments to support his writ.

But opposing counsel, Godfred Dame argued the request by the Standford-trained Doctor of Science of the Law is technically deficient.

Dr. Ayine may file an affidavit or additional evidence to his case but cannot amend the substantive writ he filed in February, it was argued.

He is also free to withdraw the case and file a fresh writ containing his improved arguments, a move which could restart the entire case.

The court dismissed his application to allow it hear the substantive matter of why he is convinced Ghana's first Special Prosecutor should be the last person to be considered for the powerful post.

Martin Amidu, a former deputy Attorney-General was in court to watch the spectacle and walked away telling journalists, he is focused on his work and is unperturbed by the legal challenge by one of his successors under the John Mills/John Mahama administration.

"I am doing my work", he shrugged off questions about how the case is affecting him.

Amidu's work is to line up officials, former and current, indicted for political corruption and prosecute them in a way that does not suggest political witch-hunt.

It is a role he has said, he is honoured to execute after similar feats he chalked singlehandedly in the 52m cedis Woyome judgment debt case.

Double: Exercise patience and wait for report – Kate Addo

0

The Acting Director of the Public Affairs Department of Parliament, Kate Addo, has asked the general public to be calm since measures are in place to probe alleged double salary claims involving  some Ministers who doubled as MPs in the Mahama administration.

There is an ongoing investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) into allegations of double salaries paid to some appointees under the erstwhile Mahama administration.

The claims have sparked public debate amid claims of political witch-hunting by members of the government since all the persons involved are members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive,  Kate Addo  said the offence of criminality in the said matter is yet to be proven and therefore implored  the Police, Members of Parliament and the general public to remain calm and circumspect in their comments until the facts of the matter are determined.

She reassured the general public that Parliament will cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies to bring the matter to a conclusion.

Former Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Inusah Fuseini, former Minister of State in charge of Social and Allied Institutions Comfort Doyoe Ghansah and former Brong Ahafo Region Minister Eric Opoku all under the John Mahama-led administration have been cited in the possible corruption scandal.

Swaziland King renames country 'The Kingdom of eSwatini'

0

Swaziland's King Mswati III has announced he is renaming the country as the Kingdom of eSwatini.

The monarch announced the official change at Golden Jubilee celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Swazi independence.

The celebrations also marked the king's 50th birthday. The southern African nation is an absolute monarchy.

The king, known as Ngwenyama or "the lion", is known for his many wives and for his adherence to traditional dress.

The new name, eSwatini, means "land of the Swazis".

Swaziland is a Commonwealth member.

The BBC's Nomsa Maseko in Swaziland says the announcement of the name change has angered some in the country, who believe the king should focus more on the nation's sluggish economy.

The country is Africa's last absolute monarchy, and in recent years demonstrators have called for a shift to democracy.

The son of Sobhuza II, who reigned for 82 years, King Mswati III currently has 15 wives. According to official biographers, his father took 125 wives during his reign.

While the official name change was unexpected, King Mswati III has been referring for years to Swaziland as the Kingdom of eSwatini.

This was the name the king used when he addressed the UN general assembly in 2017 and at the state opening of the country's parliament in 2014.
