One of the Nigerian students who fled the war in Ukraine has died in his hometown of Sokoto in northern Nigeria.

It’s not yet clear what exactly caused the death of Huzaifa Habibu.

His father, Habibu Halilu Modaci, told the BBC that he was taken to hospital after complaining of discomfort and loss of appetite.

The 22-year-old student, who was studying medicine in Ukraine, was due to graduate next year and had arrived back in Nigeria barely two weeks ago.

It was his first time returning home in three years.

Mr Modaci said that his son had narrated the horrors of the war and the scramble to flee Ukraine.

Nigeria has evacuated more than 1,500 of its students from Ukraine following the Russian invasion last month.

But there are around 100 more still trapped in the city of Kherson.

Drought pushes Somalia to brink of famine – agencies

Aid agencies have warned that Somalia is on the brink of famine.

At least 4.5 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian aid in the country, which is experiencing its worst drought in a decade.

Livestock are dying and the price of essential goods like food and water is spiking.

The number of people who have been internally displaced by the drought is said to be increasing at an alarming rate.

Carcasses of dead goats, donkeys and cattle are scattered on the roadsides in south-western Somalia.

New camps for internally displaced people are being set up.

According to the United Nations, almost 700,000 people have been forced from their homes in search of food and water, and the numbers keep rising.

There is a severe water shortage across the country and in the camps the situation is no different.

This has led to a spike in diseases like cholera, measles and acute diarrhoea. Medical centres are witnessing a sharp increase in admissions of acutely malnourished children.

Humanitarian agencies say there is a huge funding crisis. They only have 3% of what they say is needed to help the country.

Minority’s call to dissolve Economic Mgt Team useless – Okyem Aboagye

okyem aboagye

A former Member of Parliament for the Bantama Constituency, Daniel Okyem Aboagye, says the call by the Minority in Parliament to dissolve the Bawumia-led Economic Management Team is useless.

The former lawmaker’s comment follows calls by the Minority to, as a matter of urgency, dissolve the current Economic Management Team (EMT).

According to the Minority, the current Bawumia-led Economic Management Team is to be blamed for the the current economic woes in the country.

Speaking to press men, the Minority Spokesperson on Energy John Abdulai Jinapor, recalled how the Mahama-led administration introduced policies such as the Energy Sector Levy that cushioned Ghanaians in the face of international price hikes on fuel.

“Our checks have further revealed that only GH¢15 billion have been spent and yet the balance of GH¢3 billion cannot be accounted for. “We call on President Akufo-Addo to dissolve the Economic Management Team because they have not lived up to expectation. Indeed, if I were the Vice President what I would be doing is to tender in my resignation as head of the Economic Management Team. This performance has been abysmal. Indeed the failure of this government is legendary,” John Abdulai Jinapor told pressmen.

Reacting to the Minority’s call on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, the former Member of Parliament for the Bantama Constituency, Daniel Okyem Aboagye, stated that the call is a clear case of a Much Ado About Nothing situation.

He stated that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) cannot extricate itself from the current challenges the country is confronted with.

Daniel Okyem Aboagye maintained that the country’s current economic woes cannot be said to be as a result of poor management by the Economic Management Team is useless.

“The Minority’s call to dissolve the Bawumia-led Economic Management Team is very useless. The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) cannot extricate itself from the current challenges the country is confronted with. What did the NDC do when they were in power? Although we are in a Ukraine covid-19 economy, Ghana’s current inflation rate is better than that of the NDC’s time,” he added.

In support of the “Keeping Ashanti Region Clean and Green” agenda, Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL) has presented 13 brand new state-of-the-art-waste collection trucks to district assemblies in the Greater Kumasi Area of the Ashanti Region.

The waste management trucks will help address the problem of lack of adequate garbage trucks and also ensure effective and efficient management of waste in the Greater Kumasi area.

The short but colourful ceremony, which came off at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council in Kumasi recently, was graced by a representative of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, and some metropolitan municipal chief executives (MMCEs).

Receiving the trucks on behalf of the assemblies, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah, expressed that the partnership forged between his region and Zoomlion would help improve upon sanitation in the Greater Kumasi area.

He said the area was saddled with logistical constraints in the space of waste management, one of which he indicated was the lack of adequate garbage trucks.
He, therefore, commended Zoomlion for the gesture and assured that the trucks would be used for its intended purpose.

“Now we will see sanitation in Greater Kumasi and its environs improved,” he averred.
Furthermore, he said the gesture will boost the “Keeping Ashanti Region Clean and Green” project, thus describing the gesture from Zoomlion as “very timely.”

“Together with His Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, all Metropolitan Municipal, District Assemblies, Nananom and the people of Ashanti Region, we will ensure the proper use of the trucks and tricycles to promote a cleaner and beautiful Kumasi,” Mr. Osei-Mensah again assured.

To this end, Hon. Osei-Mensah entreated residents in Kumasi and its environs to get involved in making the region clean and green.

The Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, reiterated his group’s commitment to ensure that the Akufo-Addo’s vision of ensuring a clean Ghana is achieved.

He promised that Zommlion will also make available tipping tricycles and aggressively help promote the One Million Bin agenda all in an effort to ensure a clean Greater Kumasi area.

Ukraine conflict: Russia trying to starve Mariupol into surrender – MP

A Ukrainian MP has accused Russia of trying to starve the besieged port city of Mariupol into surrendering.

Dmytro Gurin was speaking soon after Ukraine rejected a Russian deadline demanding Mariupol’s defenders lay down their arms in exchange for safe passage out of the city.

Mariupol is a key strategic target for the Russian military.

Around 300,000 people are believed to be trapped there with supplies running out and aid blocked from entering.

Residents have endured weeks of Russian bombardment with no power or running water.

Mr Gurin said there was no question of Mariupol surrendering.

“Russians don’t open humanitarian corridors, they don’t let humanitarian convoys enter the city and we clearly see now that the goal of the Russians is to start to [create] hunger [in the city] to enforce their position in the diplomatic process and if the city does not surrender, and the city will not surrender, they won’t let people out. They won’t let humanitarian convoys into the city.”

Under the proposal, which Ukraine had until 05:00 Moscow time (02:00 GMT) to accept, Russian troops would have opened safe corridors out of Mariupol from 10:00 Moscow time (07:00 GMT), initially for Ukrainian troops and “foreign mercenaries” to disarm and leave the city.

After two hours, Russian forces say they would then have allowed humanitarian convoys with food, medicine and other supplies to enter the city safely, once the de-mining of the roads was complete.

But the deadline came and went.

Should Russia capture Mariupol, it would help it create a land corridor between the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, controlled by Russian-backed separatists and Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. So far though, Mariupol’s defenders have stood firm.

There are mounting concerns about the humanitarian situation, with Yaroslav Zhelezniak, a Ukrainian MP from Mariupol, calling it “hell on Earth”.

Residents spend most of their time in shelters and basements as Russia continues its unrelenting attack on the city, from land, air and sea, officials say.

Pictures show a city in ruins, with entire neighbourhoods devastated. The mayor, Vadym Boychenko, estimated that over 80% of residential buildings had either been damaged or destroyed, a third of them beyond repair.

Bodies are being left in the streets as it is too dangerous to get them.

Mr Gurin said teams were still unable to clean the rubble of a theatre which Ukrainian officials say was bombed by Russia last Wednesday. Hundreds of people are believed to remain trapped in the basement, which withstood the attack. Moscow denies targeting the building.

“The services cannot clean this rubble because the shelling never stops and bombing never stops. It’s really dangerous,” he said. He could not give an estimate on how many people had managed to flee the area as “we don’t have connection with Mariupol”.

Since the war began, authorities say at least 2,500 people have been killed in Mariupol although the true figure may be higher.

Previous efforts to evacuate Mariupol’s civilians have been blocked by Russian fire, although local authorities say that thousands have been able to leave in private vehicles.

On Sunday, the Ukrainian deputy prime minister said 3,985 people had fled from Mariupol to Zaporizhzhia, adding that on Monday the government plans on sending about 50 buses to pick up further evacuees from the city.

President Volodomyr Zelensky has said the Russian siege amounts to a “war crime”.

“This is a totally deliberate tactic,” he said. “They [Russian forces] have a clear order to do absolutely everything to make the humanitarian catastrophe in Ukrainian cities an ‘argument’ for Ukrainians to cooperate with the occupiers”.

My alleged suspension is unwarranted and illegal – Nii Nortey Adumuah fires

The Oshiahene of Osu Kinkawe, Nii Nortey Adumuah IV, says he has not received any suspension letter from the Osu Kinkawe Dzaase, describing the alleged action as illegal.

The Osu Kinkawe Dzaase recently issued a statement suspending three persons indefinitely from the Dzaase for allegedly attempting to install a non-royal as the Osu Mantse.

The persons suspended are the Oshiahene of Osu Kinkawe, Nii Nortey Adumuah IV of the Adjuate House, the Head of Family of the Adjuate House, Nii Ashong Omaboe and the Head of Family of the Teinor House, Nii Akwei Addo.

In the letter addressed to the Oshiahene, Nii Adumuah IV said that he falsely held himself as the Dzaase of Osu and “wrote a letter to the police, purportedly on behalf of the Osu Kinkawe Dzaase on a false Osu Kinkawe Dzaase letterhead seeking the police assistance to install Osu Mnatse”.

The letter further stated that the Oshiahene and his Head of Family at the Adjuate House then purportedly enstooled one Bernard Nortey Botchway, whom the letter said, does not hail from any of the two royal families, the Owuo Family or the Dowuona Family as the Osu Mantse, contrary to the customs and traditions of Osu, in January 2022.

“Your conduct is subversive to the Osu Stool and the Osu Kinkawe Dzaase, which has brought the Osu Stool, the Osu Kinkawe Dzaase and the entire Osu Traditional Area and Authority into disrepute,” the letter stated.

However, in an interview, Nii Adumuah, denied receiving any suspension letter.

According to him, it is wrong for Nii Atsen to take such an action because there are four Dzaases emanating from four ruling houses who come together to enstool an Osu Mantse.

“For a Dzaase to be suspended, it should be a majority decision and not just a few Minority groups to take such a decision,” he said.

He, therefore, described the alleged suspension as “out of place and unwarranted”

Razak Opoku writes: The currency and economy of every country Is under pressure

The media core mandate is to educate and inform the masses. The Ghanaian media is no exception to this.
However, with utmost respect, some media outlets out of ignorance, mischief and agenda settings have been always deepening the ignorance of the masses through misleading information.

As an honest government, President Akufo-Addo has admitted the current challenges and seriously working hard to mitigate the effects of the currency depreciation, rise in fuel, goods and services which are not as a result of government’s mismanagement but rather war in Ukraine and the cascading effects of COVID-19 variants.

The factors that weakened the fundamentals of the economy in Mahama’s era thereby affecting the exchange rate are not the same factors under Akufo-Addo’s Presidency.

In the Mahama’s era it was a complete misappropriation and mismanagement of the country’s meagre resources. It was borne out of incompetence.
“Dumsor,” reckless payment of judgement debts, poor credit ratings etc. were some of the factors which undermined the fundamentals of the economy during Mahama John’s era.

During the period of Mahama, there was no free SHS policy as it is being implemented under Akufo-Addo’s government at the cost of GHc 7. 5 billion annually.
There were no 1D1F, no 1 Constituency 1 Ambulance, no NAELP, no NEIP, no NABCO, no GEA, no Planting for Food and Jobs, no 1 Village 1 Dam, no employment in the public sector, no allowances for teachers and nursing trainees etc.
Yet, the fundamentals were so weak under John Mahama’s administration to the extent that the rate of depreciation badly exposed the Ghanaian economy.

No external factors were the cause of Cedi depreciation under Mahama’s administration. While the economy and currency of every Country was doing well, it was the reverse in Ghana under Mahama’s administration.

However, it is true that Cedi is being depreciated under Akufo-Addo’s Presidency but it is important to state that this challenge is not only peculiar to Ghana.
Almighty Euro, Pounds, Yen, Ruble, Renminbi etc. have all been depreciated against the US Dollar. This is a global phenomenon due to the COVID-19, Russia-Ukraine War, Sanctions against Russia, tensions between Russia and the West.

Can anyone mention a country which is currently doing well economically in the face of the aforementioned global crisis? Absolutely none.

All countries are suffering economically due to the global crisis we are being subjected to by the conduct of Russian and variants of global COVID-19.

Yes, the Cedi is depreciating and fuel is on the rise but:

  1. You are not experiencing “Dumsor” like it happened in the era of Mahama’s administration.
  2. Your children are still enjoying the free SHS policy unlike Mahama’s administration.
  3. You are enjoying Allowances as Teacher and Nursing Trainees unlike Mahama’s administration which was cancelled.
  4. You are witnessing road construction across the country simultaneously unlike Mahama’s administration.
  5. You are enjoying the benefits of 1D1F, Planting for food and jobs, NEIP, NAELP, NABCO etc. Programmes unlike Mahama’s administration.
  6. You are benefitting and making good use of the government’s digitalization and digitization programme unlike Mahama’s administration.
  7. You are benefitting from the services of the 1 Constituency 1 Ambulance initiative of Akufo-Addo’s Government unlike Mahama’s administration.
  8. Your funds which were locked up in the bank have been redeemed due to the banking/financial sector clean up exercise by Akufo-Addo’s Government unlike Mahama’s administration which caused the collapse of the banks/financial sector.

All hope is not lost under Akufo-Addo’s Presidency.

Plastic waste is useful-UPPR General Manager

The General Manager of UPPR, Mr. Perumalsamy Suresh Kumar has called on Ghanaians to separate their plastic waste at home and forward them to collection or Buy back centres for sale. He said people could make a decent income if they collect broken or used plastics for sale.

“UPPR is ready to buy such plastics for processing into waste bins, buckets, chairs and other plastic products.”

Established in the year 2013, UPPR is one of the leading producers of top quality injection moulded waste bins in the West African sub-region.

According to him, UPPR also recycles waste plastics and turn them into useful items for domestic use.

He used the opportunity to call for support from both the government and other corporate bodies to enable them expand, and help curb the plastic waste menace in the country.
“We want to process PET bottles on a large scale but we also need funds and support from Government, our activities can go a long way to solve the plastic pollution menace in the country.

Welcoming the press to the company, the Head of Administration of UPPR, Mrs. Isabella Gyau Orhin said the company supports the United Nations in its quest to build sustainable cities and communities as stated in the Sustainable Development Goals number 11 as well as goals numbers 14 and 15 which talks about “Life under water” and “Life on land respectively. This can easily apply to plastic pollution on land and in the sea.

“We also believe in the President’s vision of making Accra a cleaner city in Africa,” she said adding, “UPPR has since its seek to rid the cities and communities of filth by processing used plastics and adding value to them and turning them into other usable household and industrial products.”

She also said the company operates a buy back centre at its premsies and has been processing PET or water bottles for export in recent times.
