Parliament Updated on Border Security Measures by Defence Ministry

Following a terrorist attack on Ghanaian tomato dealers in Burkina Faso, a delegation from the Ministry of Defense, led by Deputy Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi, has addressed the Joint Committee on Defense, Interior, Foreign Affairs, and National Security in Parliament on additional security measures.

Three Ghanaians were injured and eight people died as a result of the attack. The Deputy Minister told MPs that in order to strengthen security operations along Ghana’s northern borders, Forward Operating Bases at Jirapa and Hamile are ready and will soon be activated.

The Deputy Minister said intensified surveillance is now in place along key border corridors to reduce the risk of future attacks.

Ernest Brogya Genfi also announced government approval for the deployment of Defence Attachés to Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Israel, Iran and Libya, explaining that the move is aimed at strengthening security support for Ghanaians living and working in high-risk environments.

The Deputy Minister disclosed that Ghana is engaging Burkinabe authorities in joint training initiatives aimed at strengthening escort operations and improving border security coordination.

Ernest Brogya Genfi said the broader plan includes specialised academic and intelligence-based training for selected security personnel, noting that the measures are designed to ensure the safety of Ghanaian citizens both locally and internationally.

Emmanuel Kartey, Chief Director of the Ministry; Livinus Bessing, Chief of the Naval Staff; Stephen Woseadzipko Kweku Parbey, Chief of Defense Intelligence; Ernestina Assan, Director of Public Relations at the Ministry of Defense; and Adwoa Assan, Director of Finance and Administration, were also among the delegation.
