Parties' interpretation of ballot position highly subjective- Obiri Boahene

The General Secretary for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahene, says the interpretation of parties position on the ballot box is based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.

The 12 political parties, who were okayed to contest the 2020 Presidential elections, were at the EC on Tuesday 20th October 2020 to ballot for their positions on the ballot paper.

After the balloting, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) picked the first position on the ballot paper, keenly followed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who picked the second position.

The positions of the other 10 political parties are as follows: Ghana Union Movement (GUM) 3rd, Convention People’s Party (CPP)4th, Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) 5th, Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) 6th, All People’s Congress (APC) 7th, Liberal Party Ghana (LPG) 8th, Peoples National Convention (PNC) 9th, Progressive People’s Party (PPP) 10th and National Democratic Party (NDP) 11th position.

The Independent candidate will occupy the 12th position on the ballot paper.

Some Interpretations have gone viral following the positions of the parties on the ballot paper.

While some NPP faithfuls are arguing that the party’s 1st position on the ballot paper signifies victory, their counterpart,  the NDC is of the view that the 2nd position on the ballot paper means the second coming of the party in power.

Reacting to issues surrounding the balloting in Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, The General Secretary of the ruling NPP, Nana Obiri Boahene noted that people have different interpretations of numbers which are purely personal based on the individual’s belief.

“People have different interpretations about everything, the same way a lot of people do not believe in numerology. This explains why the NDC is arguing that their 2nd position of the NDC signifies the second coming of Mahama. So it is based of the beliefs, the interpretation and angle etc of whoever is making the statement or argument,” he added.
