Accra to experience power outages

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has notified the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) of its planned works in parts of Greater Accra.

Due the works, which start on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 and end on December 3, 2021, parts of Greater Accra will experience power outages.

In a letter to the ECG, GRIDCo said the power outages had become necessary to allow its team execute “planned works” within the Achimota – Mallam corridors for the decommissioning and replacement of existing lines with new higher-capacity conductors.

It said the decision has become crucial to transfer as much load as possible to Pokuase, Achimota, Accra East and Tema in order to limit loading at Mallam and Accra Central substations.

According to GRIDCo, it has categorised the areas to be affected into groups A, B, and C.

For Group A, it noted that Adabraka Old Timers, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Ageege, Lartebiokorshie, Valco Trust, Teachers Hall, among others will be affected.

The areas that will be affected in Group B are ApoLlo Theatre, Asylum Down, Adabraka Market, Korle Gonno, Sukura, Mamprobi Poly Clinic, James Town and Mataheko.

Meanwhile, those in Group C include Central Police Station, Cocobod, Kingsway, Abossey Okai, Chorkor, Appiah Danquah, Graphic Press House and SSNIT.

A Communications Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr William Sangmor has called for flexibility in the accommodation process of law students in the Country.

This is in response to the fact that many law students failed their examination organised this year.

790 out of 2,824 candidates passed the exam organised earlier this year.

The pass rate is in line with previous years, except for 2020, where 1,045 students out of 2,763 passed the entrance examination.

In 2019, only 128 candidates out of a total of 1,820 passed the exam.

In 2017, 500 students were admitted into the School, with 450 students admitted in 2016.

The poor pass rate has in the past sparked calls for a reform of legal education in Ghana.

Critics have said the General Legal Council deliberately restricts people from gaining access to legal education.
