PNC appeals to EC over flagbearer disqualification

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has launched a fresh appeal to the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, seeking the reconsideration of its Flagbearer, Bernard Mornah, for the 2024 general elections.

The PNC’s National Chairman, Samson Asaki Awingobit, made the appeal during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held yesterday, urging the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, to allow Mornah to contest despite an ongoing legal battle over his disqualification.

Awingobit expressed his deep concern over the situation, noting that the party would withdraw the case from the courts if they receive positive feedback from the EC.

“This election is very dear to my heart,” he stated, highlighting that the PNC, as one of Ghana’s oldest political parties, predates both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“We’ve contested every election, and I believe this time should not be any different.”

He further emphasized the historical significance of the PNC’s participation in the democratic process and appealed to the EC to consider their position, saying, “I’ve appealed to your good self and your team. And today, once again, I’m appealing to you.”

Awingobit referenced a letter from the EC inviting the PNC to send agents to observe the printing of the notice of poll ballots, which he saw as a sign of progress. However, he expressed his desire for more substantial reassurance regarding the party’s flagbearer. “We are very sure that your interest to print the plus 2% ballots won’t cause any alarm. I would love to hear good news from you.”

The legal dispute over Bernard Mornah’s disqualification has cast a shadow over the PNC’s 2024 election ambitions, but Awingobit remained hopeful.
He indicated that should the EC reconsider their decision, the party would withdraw the legal case entirely. “Even though I am in court, I would love to hear good news from you, and I will withdraw the matter from court when we hear the good news,” he concluded.

The EC’s response to this plea remains to be seen, but the PNC’s readiness to abandon its legal challenge in exchange for Mornah’s reinstatement could mark a significant turning point in this electoral saga.
