A 59 year-old Poultry Farmer and President of the Ghana National Inshore Fishing Association, Mr Jospeh Nii Armah Quaye, was adjudged the 2020 best farmer of the Ningo Prampram District at the 36th District Best farmer Awards.
The District awards which came off at the Nyigbenya D/A School park in Tsopoli, saw distinguished farmers who have excelled in their various fields being it crop, animal and fishing, being awarded.
The best disability award went to Madam Stella Djangma whiles the second best farmer went to Mr David Asemn Narh.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Ningo Prampram, Mr Jonathan Doku, who spoke under the theme, “Ensuring Agribusiness Development under COVID- 19 – Opportunities and Challenges, said government through it flagship programme, ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ has done enough for the farmers in the District.
He said plans are far advanced for the setting up of an agric mechanization center and the construction of mini dams in the District, which will begin next year.
The District Agric Officer, Mr Prince Ofori Boateng, bemoaned the destruction of farmlands by some estate developers for the construction of buildings and other private properties.
He said the development is not only threatening the livelihoods of farmers but also the sector and the country’s economy.
He therefore called for a more consensus effort in protecting farmers and the agri business as a whole.
Best farmer
For his part, the 2020 District Best Farmer, Mr Joseph Nii Armah, who is a fishermen and a poultry farmer, said the cost of poultry farming is a major concern, citing the prices of poultry feeds and that of other cost.
He called on the sector ministry to subsidize the prices of imported poultry feeds and other chemicals used in their field.
For his award, the best farmer took home, a 32 inch Tv, double door fridge, spraying gun, machetes, farm boots among others.
