Public asked to speak up against Gender based violence

DWOSO initiative, a feminist organization in Ghana, has tasked the general public to speak up against Gender based violence in the communities.

DWOSO initiative in collaboration with IGRED organized a workshop on Gender Based Violence and Sexual Harassment for students of Royal Ann College of Health at Abukwa–Kumasi.

The workshop was organized in line with the 16 days of activism by the United Nation which started on 25th of November and ended on 10th  December 2021.

The program formed part of efforts by DWOSO initiative to end all forms violence against women in Ghana.

The program was under the theme : “Speak up against Sexual Harassment”.

Speaking on sexual abuse and exploitation at the event, the Executive Director for IGRED, Noelyne Mensah, urged participants to speak up and report any form of sexual abuse and exploitation adding that it is the surest way of ending gender based violence and bringing perpetuators to book.

Also speaking at the event, Evangeline Osabutey, the Mentorship Lead at DWOSO charged participants to speak up and challenge norms that foster gender based violence in all spaces they find themselves.

“Causes and contributing factors of gender based violence include Objectification and degradation of women in our media,  Rape culture Harmful gender norms   and  Inequality. I will call on you all to speak up and challenge norms that foster gender based violence in all spaces you find yourselves,” Evangeline Osabutey told participants.

Beatrice Antwiwaa, the Community Outreach lead at DWOSO, also asked women and girls to adopt empowering beliefs about their power to shape their destiny by discarding all the negative gender stereotypes that have kept them as subordinates to men.

Chika Yawson Boham, a member of the DWOSO survivor support team, also urged the public to believe, help and create a safe haven for victims of sexual harassment and gender based violence.
