River Offin: “Canoe accident due to overloading” – NADMO

The accident that led to the drowning of some 4 people on River Offin in the Atwima Mponua in the Ashanti Region was due to overloading, The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has said.

Five people, who were on board a canoe on the River Offin, were reported missing after the canoe capsized last Friday.

Speaking on the incident, the Atwimoa Mponua District NADMO Disaster Control Officer for Agogoso Zonne, Maxell Adu explained that the canoe which was designed to take five people at a time, carried nine passengers as at the time of the accident.

He iterated that the accident was a result of overloading.

“There were nine people in the canoe on the river offin. Two have been retrieved dead. if the canoe had less than five people on board at the, that incident would not have happened because not more than five people should be on that boat.”

“They were too many on the boat so the canoe collected the water and then it capsized. One of the dead was also swimming to safety but one of the colleagues who was drowning dragged him back,” Atwimoa Mponua District NADMO Disaster Control Officer for Agogoso Zonne, Maxell Adu told the media.
