Saboba: Boat accident victims not BECE candidates – Police

The Saboba District Police Commander, DSP Shine Zoiku, has refuted media reprts that the kids who died in the Saboba boat accident are candidates in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Nine pupils of the of Lwanga R/C JHS in the Saboba District of the Northern region reportedly died after a boat carrying them capsized.

The boat which capsized was crossing a river at Saboba in the Northern Region.

The deceased were among some 31 students crossing from Dutuin after helping their headteacher work on his farmland.

After the accident, there were media reports that all the victims were BECE candidates.

But in a latest development, the Saboba District Police Commander, DSP Shine Zoiku said the students were were Form 1 and Form 2 pupils, and that they were not BECE candidates as it is being reported.

“They are not writing the BECE. They went to the farm of the headmaster. They are all males, aged between 16 and 22, and all of them are males. All the survivors were also male and the school authorities said they were not aware of this decision, ” DSP Shine Zoiku added.

Meanwhile, the embattled headmaster Mr Jashain Emmanuel who has been charged with manslaughter, has been remanded to prison custody.

He will re-appear before Court on Monday 22nd November 2021.
