Small-scale miners unhappy with vetting process

The Association of small-scale miners have announced its displeasure with government’s decision to vet all small-scale miners in the country for the second time.

Government in December 2017 announced its decision to vet all small-scale miners across the country to regularize and monitor their activities.

The move, according to government was to ensure that that small-scale mining is done in a responsible, environmentally-friendly and sustainable manner.

However, speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, spokesperson of the Ashanti Regional Branch of Small-scale Miners Association, Samson Fosu stated that they are not satisfied with the back and forth surrounding the vetting of small scale miners.

He noted that the small scale miners were asked to present their documents and license to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on illegal mining for vetting barely two months ago. He added that he is surprised the government still wants the association to present documents they have already submitted.

“Government is asking too much, we may not be well-versed with the laws on mining small-scale mining but we know the rules and the regulations”, he said.

The government on Monday, November 26, began the vetting of all small-scale miners and their documents.

The vetting process, which is being spearheaded by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on illegal mining will be held within a two-week period from Monday, November 26, 2018, to December 7, 2018.

Also speaking on Atinka AM Drive, Secretary to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, Charles Bissue, stated that the vetting is in three stages and that the committee is currently in its final stage.
