The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Enterprise Agency (GEA), Margaret Ansei, has hailed President, H.E John Dramani Mahama for laying the foundation for Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) to thrive in a modern, competitive economy.

Speaking at the national celebration of the 2025 International MSME Day in Accra, Margaret Ansei described Mahama’s legacy as one of “visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to MSME development,” praising his renewed focus on job creation, inclusive growth, and digital transformation as pivotal in creating an enabling environment for Ghanaian entrepreneurs.

This year’s event, themed “Connecting the Entrepreneurs: Unlocking Digital Opportunities for MSMEs,” was hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry (MoTAI) and the United Nations in Ghana. It received generous support from the UN Joint Programme Leveraging Digital Ecosystems for Increased MSME Productivity, funded by the Joint SDG Fund with contributions from the European Union and other UN Member States.

Ms. Ansei stressed that digital and financial inclusion were no longer optional, but “essential for MSMEs to remain competitive and resilient on the global market.”

She also announced the launch of the MSME Gateway Portal, a partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which will serve as a one-stop platform offering entrepreneurs access to resources, services, and business tools. She described it as “a major step forward in our digital inclusion journey.”

According to the GEA CEO, formalizing MSMEs not only enhances transparency but also improves access to financing and promotes long-term sustainability. She called for continued collaboration among government, private sector, and development partners in building a robust MSME ecosystem.

Ms. Ansei acknowledged the leadership of MoTAI under Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, as well as institutional and development partners including the UNDP, UNCDF, German Development Cooperation (GIZ), World Bank, MTN Mobile Money, and the Mastercard Foundation.

“Thank you for your passion,” she concluded, addressing the community of MSME advocates and entrepreneurs present.

The celebration placed a spotlight on the critical role of MSMEs in Ghana’s sustainable development and showcased tangible progress made under the Joint Programme to improve access to digital infrastructure, financing, and markets for local businesses.
