A Division -Two football match at the Tema Sports Stadium on Monday between the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Football Club and Chase Sporting Club, has left a 32-year-old football fan battling for his life in the Tema General Hospital.
The victim Abdulai Azeez Sumaila, is reported to have been assaulted by some military personnel who were part of the playing and supporting body of the GAF football team.
According to the brother of the victim, Abu Sadick, his brother’s crime to warrant such an unprovoked attack from the military personnel who were all in civil attire, was a result of him pleading with some aggrieved military personnel who were attempting to pull down the fence mesh separating the main park to that of the supporters, in their quest to assault the referee whom they had accused of poor officiating.
He said the irate military personnel had attempted to pull down the wire mesh in their quest to beat up the central referee who was officiating the match between the GAF team and that of Chase Fc. However, Sumaila had intervened and urged the personnel not to destroy the wire mesh since it was government property. However, his plea was met with assault, leaving him motionless.
