TEMA MTTD arrests 30 Okada riders 

 

The Tema  Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in collaboration with the National Road Safety Commission and the Tema DVLA on Monday arrested about 30 motor tricycles known as “Aboboyaa” and Okada bikes for various offences. 

The tricycles were arrested for conveying refuse through the motorway while the Okada operators were also arrested for not possessing licence. 

Tricycles that transport refuse from various parts of Accra to the Kpone landfill site were banned from using the motorway. 

The Tema Regional MTTD Commander, Chief Superintendent,Joseph Owusu-Bempah said after escorting them to offload the refuse at the Kpone Landfill site, the tricycles will be detained and the recalcitrant operators arraigned before court. 

The Planning Officer for the NRSC, Charles Oduro Kwarteng said their office is inundated with complaints of the tricycles creating problems for motorists on the motorway.

He noted that these tricycles drive on the inner lane of the motorway causing discomfort and sometimes accident on the “express way”. 

The Tema Regional DVLA Manager, Atta Kumah Mensah said, they will start impounding rickety vehicles that are not road worthy “and give them prohibition until the they are put to order before they will be released.”
