Twerking nurse erred but deserves fair hearing – Lawyer

A human rights lawyer, Joyce Opoku Boateng, says although the nurse who was seen twerking in a viral media has the right to dance, the code of ethics of professional groups restricts such rights.
The Ghana Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) over the weekend condemned a video in which a uniformed nurse was twerking on social media.
A video clip which has gone viral on social media projects a nurse twerking in her uniform.
A statement signed by the President for GRNMA, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, said the act is unacceptable and a disgrace to the nursing profession.
According to her, such practices do not reflect the ethics, etiquette and standards of the profession.
The leadership of the GRNMA has since directed all regional executives of the GRNMA as well as the general membership of the association to assist in the identification and subsequent investigation of the said nurse.
All nurses and midwives have been asked to desist from such unacceptable behaviours especially when in uniform in order to protect the dignity of the profession.
Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, A human rights lawyer, Joyce Opoku Boateng said persons belonging to professional bodies  are expected to conduct themselves in ways which will promote the name of the profession.
She mentioned that such professional groups have codes of ethics available to all members of the association which must be adhered to at all times.
Human rights lawyer, Joyce Opoku Boateng, however added that although the said nurse might have breached the code of ethics of the association, it will be appropriate for the executives of the association to give her a fair hearing.
“She erred but then again she cannot just be punished. If her act goes contrary to the code of ethics of the association, there should be a disciplinary committee to listen to reasons for her actions before sanctions are meted out to her”, she said.
