US Embassy, GJA to deepen partnership

 

Officials of the U.S Embassy in Ghana have paid a courtesy call on the new executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).

On Thursday,  21st of July, 2022, the U.S Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, congratulated the new President of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Albert Dwomfour on his election to the high office.

In this regard, a delegation from the Embassy, led by the Press Attache, paid a visit to the new leadership of GJA at the Press Centre, in Accra to officially congratulate them.

Speaking on behalf of the Embassy, the Press Attache at the U.S Embassy in Ghana, Kevin Bronsnahan, said that, they recognize press freedom as a central tool to democratic governance, therefore, they look forward to working with the new leadership of the GJA to support press freedom.

“I’m here on behalf of the U.S Embassy to congratulate the new leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association and to see how we can continue to work together to support press freedom”.

Mr. Bronsnahan, also reiterated that the US Embassy over the years has introduced exchange and development programmes aimed at protecting Journalists in Ghana, thus he believes the Embassy and the GJA  will continue to have a great relationship to support journalists in Ghana and across the country.

“We have exchange programmes and professional development programmes every year for journalists that include some exchange programmes that take place in the United States and also sometimes we bring in an American expert here in Ghana to talk about topics like fact-checking’’ he added.

Meanwhile, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Albert Kwabena Dwomfour, expressed his profound gratitude to the delegation for reengaging and reintroducing themselves to the Association. He also emphasized the fact that the U.S. Embassy is the first to have paid a courtesy call to the executives and for the matter, they assure them of continued support and collaboration.

“Let me stress on record that, the U.S. Embassy is the first diplomatic community of body that has paid a courtesy call on the new executives, the “Dwomfour Administration”, we’ve also assured them of our continuing support and collaboration and cooperation in any form,” he said.

Mr. Dwomfour used the opportunity to appeal to the delegation to continue to support GJA with exchange programmes, capacity-building workshops, and also the partnership awards scheme. This, he said will help develop journalists professionally.

On Thursday, June 30, the newly-elected national executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) were sworn into office.

A justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice George Kingsley Koomson, administered the Oath of Office to all the executives.

They will serve for three years.
