Video: Darkuman Residents Accuse Police of Brutality and Theft During Swoop

Darkuman Residents

Residents of Darkuman Cable in Accra are accusing the Ghana Police Service of aiding in what they describe as a daylight robbery under the guise of a police swoop.

According to eyewitnesses, the swoop, allegedly aimed at clamping down on illicit drug activity, turned violent when police officers reportedly collaborated with an armed vigilante group. The group, said to be operating with the support of the police, allegedly assaulted residents and looted properties.

Victims claim that wooden structures and shops were damaged, several people were injured, and personal items—including mobile phones and money—were stolen. Some residents said the vigilantes, armed with knives, shovels, and other weapons, attacked them while police officers looked on without intervening.

Speaking to Atinka News reporter Samuel Nyamekye Jnr., residents expressed outrage and fear.

In an off-camera conversation, the Darkuman Police Commander confirmed that officers had been deployed for an official operation at the location but claimed he had no knowledge of any vigilante group acting alongside the police.

The residents are calling on government authorities and the Inspector General of Police to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure accountability. They are demanding justice and protection from what they say has become a recurring pattern of abuse.
