VW's presence will not collapse local automobile business – Minister

The minister for Business Development, Dr. Mohammed Awal Ibrahim has said the decision by Volkswagen (VW) to set up a Vehicle assembling plant in Ghana to serve the West African sub region  is not to collapse local companies but rather “help them grow”.

The Business Development Minister made the disclosure in an interview on the sidelines of a ceremony to launch the “Responsible Business and Integrity week’ organised by the Alliance for Integrity and the German Development Agency, GIZ, on Monday.

Dr. Awal Mohammed said, Germans are well noted for very good automobile vehicles and therefore their coming to Ghana is to partner with indigenous Ghanaian companies to create a strong  market in West Africa.

“West Africa has over 350 million people with a 500 billion dollar economy, so if they come, they are going to help Kantanka to grow”

The C.E.O of Kantanka Automobile, Kwadwo Sarfo Jnr, in a recent interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, following  the announcement of VW’s decision to set up an assembling plant in Ghana,  appealed to the government to give Kantanka motors tax waivers if indeed Government is serious about giving support to local industries to compete on the international market.
