Wa: Flogging of “sex tape” lovers is an offence– Expert

Human Rights lawyer, Joyce Opoku Boateng, has condemned the flogging of suspects in ”sex tape” saga in Wa in the Upper West Region.

A tricycle driver and a ticket seller at the Wa Central Market in the Upper West Region received 20 lashes each after their sex tape leaked on Social media.

The two were flogged after the Overlord of the Waala Traditional Area, Wa-Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV allegedly ordered their caning by some youth in Wa.

According to reports, the lady in question uploaded the sex video on social media on Sunday, May 29, 2022.

The Waala Traditional Area constituted a by-law in late 2021, banning such practices after it was observed that leaked sex tapes were on the surge amongst the youth in the Wa municipality.

The Overlord of the Waala Traditional Area has warned that anyone who leaks their sex tape or nude photos will face the Bye-laws of the Traditional Area.

Speaking to the issue on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, Human Rights lawyer, Joyce Opoku Boateng condemned the act.

She insisted that the Waala Traditional Area should have reported the victims to the Police instead of taking the laws into their own hands.

“The first port of call should have been the Police for them to determine whether or not act goes contrary to the laws. But under no circumstance should anyone order the abuse of anyone in the name of culture. The flogging video is clearly a gross violation of Ghana’s laws and the rights of individuals. It’s illegal and should be condemned,” Joyce Opoku Boateng told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim.

Lawyer Joyce Opoku Boateng revealed that although the Waala Traditional Area constituted a by-law in late 2021 banning such practices, all by-laws are subject to the national law which protects the rights of all individuals.
