The World Suicide prevention day is commemorated on 10th September each year, with the aims to focus attention on the issue, reduces stigma and raises awareness among organizations, governments, and the public, giving a singular message that suicides are preventable.
This is a major public health challenge, with more than 700 000 deaths each year globally.
The 2024-2026 National Suicide Awareness Month theme, ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide,’ aims to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage honest conversations to prevent suicides and promote mental well-being.”
Alerting the media during the commemoration day by Mental Health Authority, under the Ministry of Health, the Acting Chief Executive for Mental Health Authority, Dr. Eugene Dordoye, said suicide is a health and social crisis that necessitates urgent intervention.

According to data from the District Health Information Management System, Ghana lost 134 lives to suicide in 2024, a 40% increase from 2023, while 1,174 people attempted suicide in the first half of 2025 alone, 475 attempts have been reported, Dr. Eugene Dordoye revealed.
He also called for a change in the way suicide is understood and reported in Ghana, urging all stakeholders, especially the media to help reshape the national narrative.
