Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, has held discussions with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, on the sidelines of the agency’s 70th General Conference in Vienna, Austria.
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between Ghana and the IAEA and expanding the country’s use of nuclear science and technology for sustainable development.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, September 16, Dr Agyeman-Rawlings said the discussions reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to using nuclear science and technology safely, securely and peacefully.
She said international cooperation would remain important as Ghana advances its nuclear programme, particularly in strengthening the country’s technical and regulatory capacity.
Dr Agyeman-Rawlings also highlighted the potential for nuclear science to contribute to key sectors, including healthcare, agriculture and energy.
“I look forward to deepening Ghana’s collaboration with the IAEA as we work to ensure that science and technology translate into tangible improvements in the lives of our people,” she said.
The 70th IAEA General Conference is being held in Vienna from September 14 to 18, 2026, bringing together representatives of member states to deliberate on the agency’s work and cooperation in nuclear science and technology.
Ghana has been an IAEA member since 1960 and is currently serving on the agency’s Board of Governors for the 2024–2026 period.
